2008 WESTERN CMP GAMES - More Events--More Entries--More Wind! - The 5th Western CMP Games Matches and the second Western CMP Games to take place at the Ben Avery Shoot­ing Facility north of Phoenix, Arizona con­cluded this past week. There were three new events on the program as well as new award categories. Shooter entries were more than double 2007 numbers. Winds were bad enough that the Bronze Achievement Medal cut scores had to be adjusted downward, but never as bad as in 2007 when high winds caused the cancellation of one day of shoot­ing. In spite of strong winds, there were lots of excellent shooting highlighted by Californian Mike Miller’s win in a newly introduced GSM Three-Gun Aggregate. Most important of all, the Games trademark value of giving every shooter a great experience was at the forefront during the four days of shooting.

New Three-Position Air Rifle Rules Re­leased, 2008-2010 Rulebooks Available - The 2008-2010 7th Edition of the National Standard Three-Position Air Rifle Rules, with changes approved by the Na­tional Three-Position Air Rifle Council, are now available in printed version or as a downloadable *.pdf file. The new rules may be accessed immediately through the CMP web­site at http://www.odcmp.com/3P/Rules.pdf. Printed copies of the new rulebook may be ordered from the CMP at a cost of $2.00 each.

CMP Hosts National Youth Lead­ership Conference - CAMP PERRY, OHIO - As a coach looking for ways to moti­vate and train junior shooters, wouldn't it be ideal to spend a couple of days listening to tips, real life experiences and advice from some of the shooting world's best shooting instructors, coaches and match organizers?


Well, in case you missed it, that's what many of your colleagues experi­enced during the 2008 National Youth Shooting Sports Leadership Confer­ence at CMP's Bataan Armory conference center on 26-28 September. The conference concluded a week of training courses for junior shooting coaches and club leaders.

U.S. Olympic Team Rifle Coach, Maj. David Johnson, Speaks at the National Youth Leadership Conference - CAMP PERRY, OHIO - So, what has the U.S. Olympic Team rifle coach been doing since two of his competitors in the 2008 Olympic Games in Bei­jing brought home silver and bronze medals in our nation's finest collective Olympic shooting performance at least since 1964? Major David Johnson, USAR, who is on active duty in the Defense Department’s World Class Athlete Program as the National Rifle Coach, is already preparing for the next four-year Olympic cycle that will culminate with the London Games in 2012. The budgeting process, a primary consideration for training, is well underway at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo­rado.

USAMU first team to win International Sniper Compe­tition two years in a row, By Cheryl Rodewig, The Bayonet - FORT BENNING, Ga. - A team of two Soldiers from the U.S. Army Marks­manship Unit won the eighth annual International Sniper Competition for the second consecutive year. Sgt. 1st Class Jason M. St. John, the non­commissioned officer in charge of the USAMU Service Pistol Team, and Sgt. 1st Class Robby D. Save Blue Trail Range, Inc., www.savebluetrailrange.org - The Blue Trail Range in Connecticut is under attack from a legal assault that appears to be intended to close this popular facility. An organization that is fighting to keep the range open for public use is asking for assistance and support. Save Blue Trail Range, Inc.’s mission is to raise funds for the pur­pose of paying the necessary legal, consulting, construction, environ­mental, public relations, and other costs associated with ensuring the con­tinued daily operation of the Blue Trail Range. Blue Trail Range needs fi­nancial assistance to continue to operate and remain open. A second law­suit aimed at closing the range or restricting its activities has now been filed. One of Blue Trail Range’s attorney’s, Craig Fishbein, calls this a frivolous lawsuit, but expenses to defend against these suits are already over a quarter million dollars. Litigation will drive these costs even higher, possibly as high as one million dollars. The range needs the continued support and help of sportsmen who are concerned about keeping this ma­jor shooting sports facility in New England open. Rocky Mountain Regional CMP Cup Match. The Montbello High School Army JROTC Unit is organizing a three-position air rifle CMP Cup Match that will take place in Denver, Colorado, on 21-22 November 2008. Sporter and Precision air rifle individual and team events are of­fered. Interested teams should note that the entry deadline is 31 October. Three CMP Master Instructor Courses to train CMP GSM (As-Issued Military Rifle: Garand-Springfield-Military Rifle) Master Instructors are currently open for registration. The courses will be conducted on 8-9 November, at the new CMP Competition Center in Anniston, Alabama; on 24-25 January, at Camp Perry, Ohio and on 1-2 May, at Camp Butner, North Carolina. These workshops are open to all experienced rifle marksmanship instruc­tors and shooters who would like to receive advanced training and be certi­fied as “Master Instructors” to teach CMP-sanctioned Garand, Springfield and Vintage Military Rifle Clinics at their home clubs. The Ohio National Guard and CMP staff will host an Open House at the CMP Marksmanship Center at Camp Perry on Saturday, November 15 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Please visit Camp Perry and enjoy the new facility! Bring your whole family so that all can learn more about CMP shooting sports programs that take place at Camp Perry. There will be an air rifle “turkey shoot” center shot contest on the facility’s 10-meter electronic targets; instructors will be available to assist anyone who is new to shooting. Shooters with the 15 best center shots will each win a turkey. There will be displays and information about all CMP programs, and a brief firearms safety class running continuously throughout the day. The CMP Store will be open during the hours of the open house. Free hotdogs and beverages too! Details will be posted on the CMP website soon.



Third Annual Rifle Pop Up Target Shoot. The Ohio Rifle and Pistol Association and the Friends of Camp Perry will hold their Third An­nual Rifle Pop Up Shoot on November 22, 2008 starting at 9:00 AM. The Shoot will take place on the Modified Record Fire Range at Camp Perry, Port Clinton, Ohio with each relay shooting 40 rounds at 40 targets. A do­nation of $30.00 includes membership in FoCP and one relay of shooting. Donations from members of FoCP of $10.00 includes one relay of shooting while donations from non-members of FoCP of $15.00 includes one relay of shooting. Two Virginia Area JROTC JMIC Courses Scheduled. SFC Andrew Babic, JROTC JMIC Master Instructor, and CMP Junior Di­rector in Virginia will host two JMIC Courses (Junior Marksmanship Instruc­tor Course). A class is scheduled for 8 November at Lancaster High School located at 8815 Maryball Road, Lancaster, Virginia 22503 and an­other class is scheduled for 22 November at American Legion Post 146 located at 217 E. City Point Road, Hopewell, VA 23860. Classes are scheduled from 9:00 A.M. until 4:00 P.M. Registration is required and there is no cost for the JMIC Course.
