Ammo question

Well. it happened. My "lifetime supply" of .22 ammunition is about to run out (damn modern medicine and low-carb diet). Did I read that RWS is under new management? If so, has it affected the product in any important way? What are the long-term comparisons between RWS Target and Wolf Match Target, and is there a roughly equivalent Eley at a similar price?

Please don't start with the usual: "Buy a box from 217 different lots, etc." I know perfectly well that my hold is the determining factor in group size. I'm asking about consistency and reliability (cleanliness is a bonus).

Any on-topic comments are welcome.

CCI Standard Velocity (regular old "Blue Box" not the competition "Green Box") will shoot very well in a wide variety of match arms.

At about half the cost.

Well depending how old your RWS was RWS might have changed ownership twice. It was RWS, then Dupont and now Ruag Ammotech. I suggest you buy a brick and see how it works in your pistol. Its still world class quality ammo.

William,

From your examples, you apparently use about the same low-mid priced .22 ammo as I do. Here's what I've found (with no RR testing). The current RWS Target Rifle seems to be pretty much equivalent to the old RWS Target that Don Nygord used to recommend. Wolf Match Target is exactly the same as SK Standard Plus, according to an importer, and both are quite good. I feel that most Eley and Lapua types are now overpriced; the one inexpensive Eley, Eley Sport, is made in Mexico and is basically Aguila SV, not really like any other Eley. You really have to be careful with Fiocchi: IMHO only the Super Match (SM prefix) and Match (M prefix) lines are good, and both are expensive. The other Fiocchi lines, again IMHO, are junk.

I agree with Steve about CCI SV (blue label plastic box - 0032), although there are conflicting stories about the paper box stuff (0035) which is being sold as a cheaper equivalent. Also there are certain guns, such as Pardini semi-autos, which frequently have problems functioning with CCI SV due to its long length. Federal 711B (subsonic) is another domestic possibility. Neither the CCI nor the Federal is actually half the price of the Euro ammo mentioned; it's more like 2/3 in my experience.

HTH,
FredB
