I have read that the calibre used to be .41 or so in the old pistols?

Nearer .44 or .45 caliber. Most of the percussion duelling pistols, particularly the later ones, shoot a .433 round ball patched to fit.

Flintlock pistols for international competitions are .44s, but they shoot at 25m.
