Has anybody every been to the State Games of America. Is it worth goning to?

I think that this is the first year they actually have any shooting events. Would be nice if they could be overwhelmed with competitors, just to show that the shooting sports have support. (Too bad our state games have pooped out in Ill)

I was invited to attend. I immediately signed up for Air and Women's Sport Pistol which cost me $40.00. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to shoot at the Olympic Training Center. I hope my boss feeld the same way!

Not to sound clueless here . . . WTF are the "State Games?"

Steve: The State Games idea is something that is a kind of state Olympics. Most states have such Games, but not all include shooting or if they do, the disciplines vary greatly. The State Games of America is the next level. You have to qualify at your State Games to earn an invite to the National SGA. This is the first year that the SGA has included shooting. I really wanted to go, but I have a conflict and can not make it. Rats. I was the Shooting Commissioner for the Oregon State Games for several years early on. We have had ours going for well over 15 years now.
Anyway, check around and see if you guys have one going on.

The shooting events in the State Games of Americ 2007 are sponsored by USA Shooting. Pistol events are Air Pistol (40W, 60M), Free Pistol (men only), Rapid Fire (men only), Sport Pistol (women only) and Progressive Position Air Pistol. Dates are Saturday, August 4 and Sunday, August 5, 2007. There are three Junior divisions, Open, and three Senior divisions. Age determination date is December 31, 2007. USA Shooting rules will govern. Commissioner for rifle/pistol is Bob Foth, (719) 866-4881, bob.foth@usashooting.org. Web site for the Games is www.StateGames.org . Registration can be completely done on this site.

Rifle events are International Air Rifle (40W,60M), Smallbore Three Position Rifle (60W, 120M), Smallbore Prone, and Three Position Air Rifle (3 x 20). There are also Skeet and Trap events.

I happen to have all this information at my fingertips as I shot an air pistol match at the OTC today and I picked up a pamphlet on these games while there. I earlier saw info about these games on the USAS web site, but I can't find it now.

Ahhh O.K. thanks for the info- I was aware that various states conducted "State Games" (with/without shooting) but did not know that there was a "national" level of competition.

I don't think Texas has a "State Games" but we *do* have a state level shooting championship (we shoot AP on 28 April). Would a score from any "state sanctioned state championship" qualify one for invite to the "National" "State Games" or does one have to shoot in an "Official" "State Games (TM)" to qualify?

My googling of "State Games" has not come up with much beyond info from previous "State Games" in various locales . . . is there an official "State Games" website?

. . . and Texas, apaprently, supports only the "Senior State Games" which I am assuming is something different?

Answered my own questions (removed the extra period and found the web site- "D'OH!"). See below for everyone else.

This is apparently a "Colorado Thing" at this point; unless you already qualified last year.

Eligibility Requirements
Any athlete who won a medal in their local 2005 or 2006 Summer State Games or their 2006 or 2007 Winter Games, or the
2005 State Games of America, in one of the above listed 29 sports, or is a resident of the State of Colorado for at least 30
days prior to the first day of the competition they wish to enter is eligible to compete. In addition, students who are enrolled
in a Colorado college or university are eligible, as are U.S. military personnel and their family members who are stationed in Colorado. The State Games of America have been organized in accordance with NCAA guidelines with some exceptions. Athletes who have eligibility questions should check with their school athletic administrator or coach. Any athlete with scholastic or collegiate eligibility remaining must comply with rules governing his or her scholastic or collegiate eligibility

So it is limited to those who medalled in their own individual State games? Surely participation numbers will be a little low?
