Steyr LP 5 question

Post by Fred »

OK here's a puzzler for all you LP 5 fans. Looking at my LP 5 from the top, muzzle pointing away from me, I can see a set screw just behind the magazine recess, slightly offset to the right from center. The set screw takes a 2.5mm hex key, and is not tightened down, in fact it seems to have a good bit of available travel in either direction.

Years ago, when I got my LP 5 from Don Nygord, I asked him what this screw was for, and he admitted he did not know. I have put many pellets through the gun since then without incident, but every now and then the question pops up again in my mind. Does anyone reading this know the purpose of this screw? Should it be tightened down? Does it matter? (OK, I know it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things, but does it affect the operation of the gun?)

TIA,
FredB
