AP finals rule question

Hi everyone,

Another rules type question, it was my understanding, that you are not allowed to dry fire in between shots in an air pistol finals. Is this correct? If so, what constitutes dry firing? One shooter I know, after releasing a shot, he will immediately dry fire the pistol (he has a Morini), he doesn't even lower the gun, so you get this bang for the shot, and then a click for the dry fire. Is this legal?

Something else I've seen is the dry firing of pistols while the scores are read out. I remember a few years back, at Benning, during a WC finals, I noticed one of the shooters was clicking away on her Morini while the pistol was still resting on the bench. Is this legal?

How about if you don't dry fire, but merely raise the pistol in between shots? Is this allowed?

Thanks!

During the finals 8.14.6.1.5.6 applies:-

AIMING EXERCISES ARE ALLOWED ONLY between the commands “STOP” and the following command “LOAD” but only with an open breech on a 50m pistol, or with an uncocked air pistol. DRY FIRING IS PROHIBITED.

If you haven't had the "Stop" then I can see nothing to prevent you from dry firing.

So dry firing right after the shot (before the stop) is allowed. But clicking away while they are reading out the scores, is not allowed, right?

Thank you!

I do not believe any dry firing is allowed once record firing has begun. If dry firing were allowed until the command stop, the person who shoots his last shot does not get to dry fire due to "STOP" being called shortly after.

I understand what the book reads, but the implication is NO DRY FIRING AT ALL.

We will have to agree to disagree. I don't see any such implication.

Correct
So the question now is, has anyone actually seen a competitor yellow carded for this? Because I saw this happen at Benning, and nothing was done.

Why does it matter? Where's the advantage? Assuming no gas is released, what is the rule trying to prevent?

During Master's Camp training last year at the OTC I remember Eric Buljung said no dry firing during finals. He counted it as a shot and you lost 10 points. My impression at the time was it was a hard ISSF rule and not one that Eric instituted as part of the training camp to torture his students (he did that sometimes). My experience seems to track with Mike Douglass previous post -- IE it's not allowed. It may all boil down to the definition of "AIMING EXERCISES." I'll be at he OTC this week on 3/4 March and will ask the question -- will try and report back by Friday evening.

My apologies everyone, I just spotted:-

8.6.4.5.2 Any release of the propelling charge, after the first competition
target is in place, without a hit on the target will be scored as a miss. Dry firing without release of the propelling charge is permitted except during Finals.

That last sentance says it all
