Making a plastic front aperture insert, by a newbie...

Post by nick carter »

Love the forum, but being a rank amateur haven't had much to post about.
Anyway, because of the forum I realized that the front sight aperture insert (3.5mm) on my (new to me) Diana 75 T-01 was too small to get a good sight picture. So rather than do the sensible thing and buy a set of inserts, I decided to make my own. Here's a short blog post about the first one:

I figured you guys would get a kick out of it.

Anything worth doing is worth overdoing.

I'm with you, though. I've spent countless hours making things I could buy.

Post Updated with some new info.

I updated the original blog post with some new pics, and info. I made the new inserts about .006" smaller so they're easier to get in and out. I also chamfered the edges while they were ganged up on the mandrel. I discovered that light was leaking into the disc through the aperture insert slot in the front sight tube, which wouldn't be a problem with thinner inserts. A piece of electrical tape over the slot took care of it for now.

I have made a few in the past too. I found Mcmaster Carr has some nice thin acrylic in small quantitites.
