Kind of points one back to "shoot the first 10 you see" and "no stinkin' thinkin'", huh?

There was a very interesting related story in the New York Times, January 2, 2007, titled "Free Will: Now You Have It, Now You Don’t". One section of the article talked about research showing that a subconscious decision actually precedes the conscious awareness of making that decision.

It seems that the subconscious thought process is far more sophisticated than we consciously think it is.

I'm not convinced that this study does anything other than show that our brains are hardwired to instantly recognize shapes. To me, any other conclusions are assumptions. I do however think that studies like this have value and may be helpful when more work is done. There is no doubt that conscious thought does get in the way of good scores. We seem to shoot better when we allow trained subconscious thoughts to control the shot process. IMHO training is the key here. The mind and body must be trained so that when the eye sees what it is supposed to see, i.e. correct sight alignment, the trigger finger excerts the necessary pressure on the trigger without disturbing the sight alignment. Visualization is crucial in training the subconscious. When a stray thought crosses our minds during the shot process, we should start the shot process over. BTW, these are not new ideas. Maybe there are some new and better techniques being used by coaches with access to huge resources. If so, maybe these techniques will eventually filter down to us unsupported shooters. I sure hope so.[/b]

I think you all should read the book "Blink," it is on the same lines as this article.
