Walther GSP sights

Post by Fabian »

I recently bough a second hand Walther GSp in .32 caliber. I want to use it for internatinal centerfire. However, I'm unable to set the sights so as to aim at the sub six area. The screw is all the way up and I still have to aim on the upper side of the black to hit the ten. While looking at some vendor website, I noticed that they sell several inserts for the rear sight as well as a front sight adapter. (different diameters). Which one I have to buy to resolve my problem. Any Help?

Thanks in advance, Best Regards, Carlos.

GSP front sight

Post by Mike Taylor »

Carlos,
Since your pistol had a previous owner, is it possible there is a shim beneath the front sight?
Some shooters who use centre hold find that the GSP rear sight bottoms out before they can get the group low enough to centre on the 10-ring (that is, using a centre hold, the shots are too high).
Walther provided a shim that could be fitted beneath the front sight. (Raising the front sight lowers the POI on the target.) If the previous owner of your gun had that shim in place, you might find, using a sub-six hold, that your shots are still too low, even with the rear sight raised to the limit. If the shim is there, try removing it.

It is also possible that the rear sight blade has been removed and you are just looking at the rear sight carrier. It has a square notch, similar but slightly wider and lower than the sight blade itself.

My walther osp had a similar problem because I used a sub six hold. I am a jeweler by trade so I calculated mathematically how much I needed to remove from the front sight and using a compass I scribed a line off of the top of the original and then used a diamond cut off wheel to remove the metal. It worked perfectly. My gsp sights didn't need such measures, and I regularly click between the precision and dueling targets with no problems. Yes, I have to use a sub six for everything. I have tried center hold but it freaks me out! I was hoping that the rules would go to the same aiming black for both precision and dueling. That dueling/rapid fire target is like aiming at a barn door. I don't think all those extra black rings are necessary. best regards

rear sight elevation

I think your problem can be fixed, Fabian.

By the way, I think Walther is marketing the "Klappkorn" for the GSP. This is an ingenious front sight that has two hights in one.
Simly press the "klappkorn"-blade down untill a click is heard and felt, and the front blade is in the lower position (for precision). Press again, and the front sight will pop up to the original hight (for duell, center hold).

The hight difference is set by the manufacturer so that by using the two hights of the "Klappkorn" the rear sight adjustment is eliminated or greatly reduced, when changing from precision to duell fire in the international centerfire program.

You are lucky by owning a GSP .32 in that regard, Fabian.
Morini CM 32 owners (like me) face a much worse cenario. When using a low 6 o´clock hold the gun can never be made to print to center of the precision target. Not even if the front sight is filed halfway down to its base, and rear sight ajusted all way up. That´s a real problem.

GSP front sight

Post by Mike Taylor »

Last night, my shooting buddy and I were practising some Centre-Fire, I with the Model 14, he with a GSP. After the first Precision target, he mentioned that he had run out of upward travel in his rear sight and his shots were still too low. (He uses a sub-six hold.) Now this was a gun which he had used many times before and not had such a problem. I recalled what David Levene wrote earlier in this thread about a missing sight blade. So we checked the rear sight and sure enough, the sight blade was missing. He had been shooting with only the sight blade carrier! As David said, the carrier looks very much like the sight blade - just slightly lower and with a wider notch. My buddy transferred a blade from his .22 conversion unit and was soon shooting tens. Visually, the top of the blade sits barely above the top of the carrier, but at 20 yards (our indoor range) the difference is significant.
