Aperture Questions

Post by JohnA »

Hi,

My question is about adjusting your aperture size when shooting different distances. I mainly shoot indoor 3-p .22 at 50ft, occasional I do shoot 50m. Should I make an aperture adjustment when going from 50ft to 50m, if so should it be larger or smaller? Does the aperture size matter when changing distance?

My other question has to do with the target you are shooting at. When switching from the regular NRA target to the USA Shooting target should an aperture adjustment be made?

Thanks for your help on this, aperture sizes and when to adjust them has always been a confusing issue for me.

John,

Unfortunately like most things in shooting the answer is, It Depends.

The various range smallbore targets are scaled so they should give you the same sight picture at the various didstances.

I don't have the kids I coach change their sight inserts as the distance changes.

Some of them prefer a smaller from aperture for prone and kneeling than for standing. My daughter prefers to leave it the same size for all positions.

It's really a case of experimenting and finding out what you like best.

I agree - for the most part, it depends. Particularly for indoor competition aperature size is a matter of preference. I will add that for outdoor competition lighting conditions will sometimes make a change in aperature size desirable. Also, if you ever try the Mini-Palma course (prone at 100 yards, with targets sized to simulate the full-bore Palma course) you will need to change aperatures as the "apparent distance" increases.

The take-away message is to try things out and see how they work. Good luck!
