Free Pistol Storage Question

I have a lage number of free pistols (Toz, Hammerli - many models, Pardini, Morini, HU, Steyr, Air Match). What is the most appropriate action configuration for long term storage (a year or more): (1) action open, (2) action closed - unfired, (3) action closed - firing pin dropped on an empty chamber, (4) action closed - firing pin dropped on a spent casing, (5) action closed - firing pin dropped on a plastic dummy cartridge, or (6) some other way.

I would suggest that you store them so that any springs are in a position so that they are in the longest state. For example the Toz, only free pistol I have, I keep with the action closed and the firing pin in the just fired position. After my last shot I eject the fired casing and then set the trigger and partially close the chamber so that when you pull the trigger the firing pin has no possibility to hit anything. Another option is after you shoot your last shot do not eject the round. I know of some rifle shooters that do this. It is not the greatest thing along the lines of perceived safety but it does give you an option.

Unless you have lots of $$ to spend on springs, you'd better be storing your pistols in a de-cocked state. With mine (Toz, Hammerli 150, Morini CM84E) I put an empty round in the chamber, cock the pistol and dry fire it on the empty brass casing.

When I talked to Francesco (manager of Morini Competition Arm) he very strongly advised this was the best practice with the CM84E.

If you wish to store the guns for a long time, you can very lightly lube the exterior of the spent case before putting it in the gun and dry firing on it.

Paul, no need to worry about such things. Just pack them up and ship them to me. I'll make sure to exercise them regularly. You can be confident, history as a guide, I'll leave plenty of 10s in them for you when you return. ;-)
