How to remove captive screw Feinwerkbau P8X grip

Post by Ramon OP »

Hi,

The main screw used to keep the grip attached to the pistol has gone bad and it does not enter far enough (tried it with 2 pistols) and the grip is all wobbly. I can't figure out how to remove it.

Do you know how to take it out and put a replacement back in?

Thanks

The "capture" happens via an o-ring around the screw. So just push it out from the top.

Can you describe the cause of the failure more? We have a number of shooters using the P8X and avoiding a problem is a good thing.

I suspect the screw has gotten chewed up by cross threading. One of the problem with a lot of modern pistols is that the threaded socket the grip screw goes into is free to pivot in one or more directions. That makes it very easy to get the the grip screw started at a funny angle. Some pistols (like Pardinis) that a device that is supposed to hold the "nut" where you left it, but it doesn't take much to knock it out of alignment when you try to install the screw.

The college team I help coach is constantly changing grips to accommodate this year's crop of students, so we see this a lot. It can help to grind/cut a taper on the end of the grip screw to help align things. I made a tool for the Pardinis, which consists of a 5mm brass rod threaded on one end, and knurled on the other. You screw the rod into the nut in the frame, and then slide the grip over the rod. That ensures that the nut is aligned with the hole in the grip, and you can unscrew the rod and install the grip bolt without any drama. I just picked up some 4mm brass rod stock to make a couple to use on our Benelli Kites.

Great idea!
I don't have the technology to thread a rod.
Here's what I do: hold the grip and the wrench in one hand, center the nut in the hole, hold it in place, and slide the frame's "proboscis" squarely into the hole.

In the exploded view it says it is a bushing. I'll try tapping it out

@Grippy you are right. Just taping with the hand and it comes out of the bottom.

Does the flat part go up or down? It fell whem I tapped it and missed it. It was a pleasant surprise anyway :)
