10's

Post by Craig E »

wondering if tight groups of 10's (about 3 or 4 per target) with some errant stuff around them indicate progress...as in when it's right, it's really right or if generally total tight groups but less concentration of good tens would be better goal. TIA Craig

IMHO, it is best to concentrate on your entire group rather than the number of 10's. It is nice to have 10s, but if you still throw shots into the 7, it will reduce your overall score rather quickly. However, if you keep shrinking your group, from nothing outside of 8, to nothing outside of 9, then eventually, you'd get nothing outside of 10. Well, okay, so few of us ever get to nothing outside of the 10, but if you shoot only 10s and near 10s, that's not bad :-)

I agree with Avie.. If you follow the roup shooting theory, the idea is that you shoot anywhere inside your normal hold. With practice this hold gets better and the group size reduces. In my experience a few good 10s and some fliers typically indicate that you are waiting for the perfect shot and then grabbing at it. Sometimes you are lucky and if the trigger finger is perfectly aligned the shot will not be thrown and the other times maybe not so lucky.
As avie points out in the numbers game it is far easier to loose to bad shots than it is to make up with perfect tens.
