What paper for print your own target?
Ii've been prining my own air pistol targets using software that I got as a result of this BBS. But my pellets just rip and tear and it is very hard to score. I know I can buy targets that perform better, but if I still wanted to print my own, is there a particular type of paper that works better than others?

Re: What paper for print your own target?
100 lb or heavier.
The real answer is how the paper is made. I forget the name for the process, but short layered fibers are best. Any paper that is made to be written on is not acceptable and will tear. But that generally is all we have available.

Re: What paper for print your own target?
The best paper bar none is Edelmann target paper. You can print on the back side of the 10M pistol targets. Either use a computer ink jet or take them to a local printer and the can do them in bulk. The 10M pistol targets are very low cost. I have printed both air rifle and air pistol reduced silhouette targets on the backs with great results....

Re: What paper for print your own target?
LOL! Why dont you buy the Edelmann air rifle and reduced targets instead of printing them on the back of 10m targets? They make targets for most all shooting sports.

Re: What paper for print your own target?
I have read that baking the paper (carefully...) will help on the tearing. That said, 250 Edelmann targets at 13 dollars and twenty shots per target give me 5000 shots and saves a lot of time ( and money if you use an inkjet).

I just print my targets on the reverse side of Champion choice targets, they cut real clean.

Not for Ihmsa or NRA Air Pistol or Rifle Slhouette they dont..... With the Edelmann you can shoot a 40 round match on one target with crisp holes for scoring.

Your right Steve. I didnt read "silhouette". My bad!

Re: What paper for print your own target?
I simply put a piece of cardboard behind the copy paper target, and it cuts cleanly. Just have to replace the cardboard when the hole gets too big, or move the target around to a fresh part of the cardboard.

Re: What paper for print your own target?
Like Tom I've also use heavy paper. I used 60 pound paper (from my local OfficeMax) and the pellets punch nice holes w/o the need for a cardbaord target backer. One thing you need to watch for is, let the paper dry completly after printing. If the paper is still damp from the ink, it will tear rather than punch.

support the target
The other thing to watch for is how you hold the target paper. If it is simply held by a single paper clip from the top, when the pellet hits the target paper will swing backwards. This swinging will encourage the pellet to tear the target, rather than punch a nice hole. The target paper needs to be supported so it will not swing.
The cardboard target backer provides this support to prevent the backward swinging motion of the target.
If you clip your target paper on top and bottom (or left and right), you will also have a support that will not permit the target paper to swing.
The other factor is the number of shots per target. If too many shots are made, tears and rips will occur more easily, and the individual shots will be difficult or impossible to be separated and scored. For example, for air pistol on a very good day I might have trouble scoring 5 shots on a target, and on a bad day it will be easy to score more than 15 shots on a target.

Re: What paper for print your own target?
I would rather use a commercial target, but indoors, I need an ISSF 25m pistol and 50m pistol for 21.5m as for some bizarre reason the club only 2 miles from my house shoots. So for warm indoor training, I have had to adapt!
I mentioned I used the SCATT software to print the training targets and then use either staples into a target frame with previous target cards as backers for support or for 10m training or if I do this in advance, a few squirts of aerosol adhesive. This will need to dry so best done in bulk in advance outdoors. I guess wallpaper paste or similar would be ideal. I use a laser printer on 100gsm stock to knock out these training targets. This solution produces reasonable holes but if it needs a gauge its out!
I believe some indoor training is better than no training. I accept the limitations of the material and also the fact that errors at training at a lesser distance will not necessarily be adequately reflected.
If own-printing is being used for odd-distance training, I suggest attention also be paid to the size of the visible target to preserve the perceived aiming area.

Re: What paper for print your own target?
I use the 10 meter pistol target which are 17x17 cm. I can get 5 each of the 4 air rifle animals on it. For pistol targets I go with one animal each. With wadcutter pellets you can shoot 10 shots at each with crisp holes for scoring. They are reduced in size so all can be shot at 10 meters. I use a box that the targets will slide into, much like the one a poster on this board sells.

I have a few thousand of those targets and five traps.
Can you email me the document that you use to print the scaled animals?
Thank you.

Steve, if you keep practicing the rest of us will never catch you and then we will have to write a rule that practicing is against the rules ;~)
Give em heck and I wish you some more targets in the 3 gun aggregate! Merry Christmas from the last frontier. : I use the 10 meter pistol target which are 17x17 cm. Re: What paper for print your own target?
PJ,
You can bake your own white 20# bond paper using the procedure in this website (this will answer your question directly I hope).
Click on the 'Target Talk Archives' located at the top of this page. Then click on 'General' Then click on 'Home Baked Targets'. Here you will find excellent procedures on what you are looking for. I bake mine all the time - cannot beat them for practice!
Good luck!
Matt
