By the same person, so they bid once, then decided, "no, I want to pay even MORE!"

Obviously an idiot. What's he gonna do? He's sure to win it.

Collectors (vs shooters) often perceive value in things outside of their intrinsic use.
I think the second bid just raises how high he or she is willing to go via proxy. Entering the second bid does not immediately raise the starting price, unless a second bidder steps in.
I must say, the little details of this early example are nice! The hand checkered grips look like those on early Hämmerli-Walther Olympia pistols. The embossed lettering and superior finish give it a more professional appearance. And, the absence of the usual ham-fisted butchery (aka modifications) that so many competition guns exhibit is nice.

Nonetheless, more money than I'd spend....
Anybody know what the original price was on these back in 1965?

Couldn't find anything on 1965 pricing but did find pretty much everything you wanted to know about the Model 65 here:
https://forum.vintageairgunsgallery.com ... modell-65/

If you scroll down about 70% you will find s/n 1072 which is the one f/s on ebay that Rover linked above. Since s/n's started at 1040 it is the 33rd one made. Seems unmolested so pretty cool. Not for me but somebody likes it!

Here's another one the owner is pretty proud of and presents a good story to back it up :)!

Over $2k for a FWB65, twice. That's crazy.

The last one I saw for sale on used guns in Australia was asking $150 AUD.....Maybe $100 USD.
