Good solvent recipe

Post by Questor »

I had been looking for a replacement for Hoppes solvent and was advised of this recipe by a bullseye shooter. The recipe supposedly appeared in American Gunsmith magazine. I have been using it for about six months and find it to be at least as good as Hoppes, but it's much less expensive. I got all of the ingredients at a hardware store:
40 percent deodorized kerosene
40 percent deodorized mineral spirits
20 percent marvel mystery oil
I think it cost me about $10 for enough to make two gallons. I mix it up a quart at a time in a mason jar.

Ed's Red

I use Ed's Red as a cleaning solvent - not because it is reasonable but due to a more pleasant odor. I m prone to migraines and Shooter's Choice or Tetra Gun is enough to send me into a full fledged migraine. Ed's Red is equal parts of:
Acetone
Mineral Spirits
Auto Trans Fluid
Kerosene
I make 1 to 2 gallons at one time
