Barrel Life

Post by ihasagun »

Does an air pistol barrel eventually get “shot out” like a firearm barrel? If so, about how many pellets? If buying used, what muzzle velocity range would indicate that, say, an LP10 long barrel’s life is at an end?

If it's not abused by excessive & improper cleaning, I don't think anyone has ever "shot one out."

A quality handgun (firearm) with a hammer forged barrel, will easily shoot over 100 K rounds with no problems.

Steyr barrels are cold hammer forged, making them have greater life expectancy than other types of rifling. They were the first to employ this rifling method,(they know what they’re doing) so rest assured that your barrel will outlive you.

If buying second hand, check the rifling and muzzle crown, the previous owner could have done more harm than good by over/improper cleaning the barrel.

With no combustion or the resulting abrasive byproducts, along with the absence of heat, an air pistol barrel should never wear out regardless of the manufacturing process. As stated earlier, improper cleaning technique is the most likely cause of wear or damage.
