Free Pistol

Post by Joe »

I am interested in getting a world class free pistol but it is difficult to judge the difference between the options.
Hammerli has its latest (exotic looking) free pistol that has had good results, there is the morini (the company) and theres the new copany started by morini (the man) with the soon to be released matchgun mg5
Can anyone compare the hammerli to the morini and how do you compare what is the best choice. Is there a grade-a choice that i havnt mentioed above?
thanks, joe

The choice really is between the morini & the Toz.
There is a large body of knowedge and info with these two pistols, most coach's have experiance with them etc. The choice then come's down to electronic or mechanical triggers. One thing I've seen with some Olympic level free pistol shooters using the morini is the technique of loading the pistol, dry firing,
to confirm the shot, then flicking the switch and taking the shot.

Or combine the two and get a Toz with a Morini Grip :)
Seriously though, though I would LOVE a Morini, I really can't afford one - especially when Toz 35's can turn up on the second-hand market for such good prices. I picked up mine for the equivalent of about U.S. $150. A bit worn around the edges, but with new springs, it shoots like new. Not bad for an eaxmple of the pistol which still holds the FP World Record.

I asked the same question several months ago in this group. Check it out.
I would not go for an theoretical advice about a FP. What you need is good dealer or colleague who lets you shoot the gun. E.g. I made my best experiences with a Pardini K22, the TOz is ugly, bad mechanical parts (exspecially if you are not into fixing such things by yourself)and horrible to hold for me.
Waiting since 9 months to get my license (new german gunlaw) I think I will go for the Pardini or the Hämmerli FP10 with a Rink-custommade-grip.
Oh but thats 1500Euro.

Over on the main Pilkguns website, under the Hitchiker's Guide to Shooting Glory, there is an article on free pistol.
Right now, the primary choice seems to be between Morini and the Toz-35, with the Hammerli 160 (not the FP-10) a strong 3rd place contender.

The FP-10 is an excellent pistol, and still the one that fits me best. Shoots very much like an air pistol.
It's not popular on the world scene because it's had too many teething problems. But the factory has that sorted out now and the new trigger design work just fine (see some of my earlier posts on the subject).
I have a TOZ, a Hammerli 150 and a Morini CM84E. The TOZ trigger is very adjustable for weight and "feel" whereas the Morini isn't. The Hammerli 150 trigger is adjustable, but only a small amount as sear engagement is quite critical in this design.
Of them all the H.150 has the most extreme rake angle on the grip, and the TOZ has the most "straight up" grip angle - the Morini is in the middle. If you want grip adjustability, the FP-10/MG-5 is the way to go.
As for muzzle brakes, I'm still fiddling with the one on my Morini. It makes a difference, but I can't yet quantify it. The FP-10 muzzle brake is the best one I've seen on the market yet. And those funky counterweights make it kinda handy to set the gun on the bench...
You can't go too far wrong with any of the guns mentioned here. I've certainly had no problems with mine (uh, other than my little problems with score, that is!). Good luck in your purchasing decision. As has been said here before, try as many as you can before you buy, or be prepared to buy several 'til you find the one that fits and works best for you.

Hello Joe,
No one can really give you advice on the best free pistol because it all depends on the fit.
The triggers and accuracy is very close in all those different types, TOZ, Hammerli, Morini or Pardini. I was thinking of getting a Pardini because the price was good and its as good as the others. All we need to do is get the grips to fit properly.
The main thing about about all these different makes Of FP's is not the technical side but rather how a shooter adjusts to them and how well the mental game works.
When a shooter becomes a master in FP, then they can worry about the best pistol, otherwise its learning to shoot the FP that really matters.
Buy the newest model that you can afford. I would buy a Pardini over the others because according to me its the best value.
For what it's worth,
Claudio
