Thoughts on the new Walther LP500 models?

Marketing gimmick or not, you have to give Walther some credit for using different materials to innovate air cylinders.

There is nothing innovative about using carbon fiber for the air cylinder. The original Hammerli 480 had a carbon fiber air cylinder, and it was quickly replaced with aluminum on the 480K and all their following models.

I think the carbon fiber composition used in the Hammerli 480 (this pistol was introduced some 30 years ago, more or less?) is different than what is used in the Walther LP500, so reintroducing an improved carbon fiber reinforced polymer cylinder is a good thing. Carbon fiber is cost prohibitive, that maybe the main reason why they went back to aluminum...

It's old news and we'll have to wait until they come out with HSSS (High Specific Strength Steel) air cylinders...

i think they made a great step forward with this pistol. Its light, trigger is also very great.

Few questions:

What is the difference between the Gold & Silver barrels in the Expert vs Competition models? Is it barrel color or a difference in material, spec & machining?

Is the trigger guard plastic?

Does the kit come with one or two cylinders?

One more two part question, is the chrome lettering plastic or metal and how is it attached to sleeve?

Gold barrel is vented, silver is not.

They look beautiful, but I don't trust Walther to keep their cylinder design stable for the long run in order to support long term owners. That's a deal breaker in this age of mandatory cylinder expiration dates.

Yes it is true that CF was used in the early 90’s but the weight and balance killed the Hammerli not the CF itself. CF has come a long way in 20 years.

The palm shelf is carved down.

Do you feel the better fit? I guess with the curved palm shelf, the point of support would be at the ideal back end of palm shelf.
