The CMP is testing their new optical scoring system for smallbore rifle targets at this weeks Palmyra Mid Atlantic 6400 match. Scores are posted to the Orion Results web site, it appears, as soon as they are score. Please follow the link to the scores if you are interested. https://www.orionresults.com/team/Home.aspx
My conversation with one of the attendees says it is very promising. Iphone's with a special app installed photographs the target, reads a QR code that is printed on the card, and scores each bull. From my correspondence with Brad Donaho, there is a private wireless network linking the iPhones to the PC that tallies and records the results. Eric Anderson of Orion and Brad from the CMP are at the match evaluating it.
If they get this right, it could be a game changer for the outdoor smallbore target shooting game. Imagine a scoring system that while not quite ready to totally replace manual scoring, reduces the burden to simply validating what the software measured. Think about it. Optically finding the center of a hole, knowing the diameter of the .22 bullet and relating that to the edge of the scoring ring is really all that needs to happen. The variables are the correct quantity of shots per bull, and cross fires. Finding the center of some holes in the groups I've seen lately could be a challenge.
The one thing missing from the beta version of this iteration of the Orion software is the representation of each target when one looks at the results web page.
I hope those in attendance that follow this forum will weigh in at the conclusion.
