Strong Start Earns Szarenski Gold in Men’s 50m Free Pistol

Post by USAS »

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic – Daryl Szarenski (Seale, Ala.) charged ahead of the pack Tuesday, taking a 13-point lead as he headed into the finals of the Men’s Free Pistol event at the 2003 Pan American Games. He continued on to collect his second-ever Pan American gold medal with a 658.1.
“This is a major competition and the adrenaline is flowing in every match,” said Szarenski of his stellar outing. “I was trying to focus on performance and I just wanted to come out and get as many 10’s as I could.”
Although Szarenski led the field of eight by 13 points going into the final round, he did not relax his focus. He knew what had to be done, going through all this before when he won his first Pan American Air Pistol gold in the 1999 Winnipeg Games.
“I still had goals about what kind of score I wanted to come out with,” said Szarenski. “If I had shot a bad final and still won, there wouldn’t have been much satisfaction in that.”
Despite winning the gold on Saturday in the Men’s 10m Air Pistol, Jason Turner finished in seventh place of the Free Pistol Event.
“I just wasn’t executing my plan today,” said Turner, who snuck into the final round by one point. “I just couldn’t hold it together. It was just one of those days.”
Up next for the U.S. Pistol Team is the first day of Men’s 25m Rapid Fire. Starting Wednesday at 9 a.m., the Rapid Fire competition is a two-day event at the Souci Shooting Range.
