Maybe the first thing that goes is not the knees...I suspect a concentration problem.

I agree with the previous post, it is definitely a concentration problem. The target also suggest that you may need to do a slight sight adjustment, since approximately 14 out of the 20 shots are on the right side of the target.
Try to follow a shooting pattern, in my experience the flyer comes when you are taking too much time to take the shot, if the shot does not go out by surprise, take the airgun down and begin the process again.
I have been reading the post lately, and have notice that most of the people will suggest changes in grip, position, trigger stage etc. Try not to make any adjustments to the airgun until you have a good shooting pattern, and a good knowledge of what you are doing. 95% of the problem is in you. I have been using my anschutz Lp@ without making any adjustments to trigger or grips, once you have a shooting pattern and good concentration, you will be shooting in the 550's or low 560's without a problem. At that point you might consider making further adjustments to the airgun.
It my humble opinion, regards and good luck.

I once had a banjo teacher who would encourage students by saying, "That's not a bad note, that's jazz" !

Sorry if I offend anyone, but IMHO you are highlighting the fact that you occasionally have flyers. The mere fact that they make you "crazy" is telling your subconscious to give you more of them; "Wow, he's excited about that. He must like these!"
There are two opposing approaches to ridding yourself of these:
1) (Used by many) - study the flyers extensively making them a prominent part of your routine until you can fire them at will. Then work hard at correcting whatever you learned to produce all the flyers.
2) Quit thinking about them. Decide that they're infrequent enough that they aren't wrecking your overall score. Concentrate on finding out what it takes to shoot in the middle. Ignore the flyers when they happen and let them go away.
(Now that you've shown me this target I'm going to have to dig out one of my 10x (Bullseye) targets to study for a while and get rid of the that other image. <smile>)

Concur for the most part

Post by PETE »

EdH has a good point. Are the tens and deep nines the result of one shooting technique and the flyers the result of a different technique. Hence, study the proper technique that results in the tens and simiply learn to recognize the difference. Whilst using the proper technique, have the green light on in your mind. When the yellow caution light of some other technique comes, abort. there is no rule saying you must fire everytime you raise the pistol.
Another consideration is conscuous versus unconscuous trigger squeeze. Read Don Nygord's articles on his web site and Warrens articles at the Hitchhikers guide. Also see posts on this board about the subject.
If you have a tendency to say shoot now because it looks good, sometimes you are releasing well enough and hitting the ten. Other times you are making one of several different errors and a flyer results. In the end, it is the "shoot it now because it looks good" technique that is causing both the good and the flyers.

A man's got to know his limitations

Post by Ken J »

The fundamentals of shooting well involve shooting within your bodys limitationsl Go outside those limitations and disaster will surely ensue.
Learn what your limitations are. Learn to recognize the yellow caution light. Then push the limits in practice, but stay within them during the match.

That is true of most improvisation in any musical idiom. However, if you ever want to hear how a jazz banjo is playe. Compare and contrast the styles of Sid St. Cyr who played for Louis Armstrong's Hot Five in the 1920's and 30's, and Bela Fleck who is happening now.
