Free pistol ammo

Post by jerber »

I'm starting to like the idea of free pistol
I started to do research/learn more about the sport
But one thing that I'm not sure about is what ammo does a free pistol benefit from?
I mean by velocity.
Would it be best to use a low velocity? standard ?high?
And what brand is the most used?

Any target ammo is fine, not supersonic hunting ammo. Cci standard velocity at £50, or Lapua XACT at £300 per thousand are both ideal. Don't get hung up on pistol ammo, you have a 12 inch barrel on a free pistol, so rifle ammo is fine. Pistol ammo generally is designed to work in short barrel sport pistols, but is also fine in free pistols.

Minor inconsistencies in your grip will tend to produce wider shots with harsher recoiling ammo. Standard velocity ammo is good, but that is typically measured in a rifle barrel. If you try different ammo, you can find some that give milder recoil. I have a bunch of Aguila sub-sonic that won't cycle my standard pistols, but shoots fine in a free pistol. The softer recoil is also easier on my elbow.

Don't waste your money on $20 a box ammo until your scores dictate it, if ever. Buy some quality standard velocity ammo, Norma Tac, SK Plus, CCI Standard or similar ammo.

As a newcomer to free pistol, based on my experiences I would strongly suggest shooting CCI SV until you're competitive. I could be shooting the cheapest bulk ammo now for all the difference it would make in my scores. The skills may be similar to 10M AP but the results are very different!
