DIY Target Retrevial

Post by ELPRESADOR »

Hello All,

I've searched the various threads on this forum for information about shooting at home, and home ranges.

Since I got into pistol shooting last winter I have been shooting out of the back window of my garage, its the only safe place at home to shoot. But the walk out the garage, through the house, into the back yard and back again to change a target is a little annoying to say the least. I want a better solution.

I don't want to spend hundreds, and my DIY skills are kind of limited. But if I do it, its got to be done right..

Another hobby of mine is flying drones, I have video transmitters and cameras lying round, I want to attach one onto the system somewhere powered by LiPo battery so I can beam video back to my shooting position (I have an old TV which will be ideal for this)

This will weigh 200/300 grams. Plus I need a target holder of some sort and a pulley system.

Does anyone have any recommended plans for the pulley system? I want to start putting this together.

I plan on documenting it all, maybe someone will find it/aspects of it useful for their own solutions.

I would get the following parts for running gear.

12V windscreen wiper motor.

Computer PSU for high amp 12V rail.

Bomb proof double throw switch.

Pulleys could be scavenged or fabricated. Printers quite often have nice pulleys in them.

Copy Rika target carriage system would be my advice.

Several years ago Pilkington's came to Camp Perry. He had an air rifle test set up using a model train to drive down range, then come back. I thought it was really clever. It used a cheap child's toy train (Toys-R-Us plastic, not family heirloom) with a wide (1.5"?) track. The target holder was screwed to the train. Flip the switch one way and it goes to the end flip the switch the other way and it came back. I assume there was a "stop" switches at the ends. I wish I had taken a picture.

There is a local club that uses a collection of cheap reversible electric drills for their 50 foot indoor range. I've never actually shot there, so I don't know the details of how the carriers & pulleys are configured, but I always liked the concept.

Nice! I approve of this design. Looks pretty bombproof.

Depends on distance and what kind of clearances you have.
Mine is 10 meters, under the house, and with virtually no vertical clearance/slop. So I made a rail out of some drywall metal pieces and a wheel assembly from a hanging door. And a hand crank eliminates hassles of an end-switch for a motor.
