Second Knob on Anschutz Front Sight

Post by mtncwru »

Does anyone know what the purpose of the extra knob on the left side of my Anschutz front sight is for?

I agree with Solar, but it might also be beneficial to leveling if you don't use a level.

Surely the sprung wire that pokes into the tunnel does that already, and much better?

Would it allow the tunnel to be mounted backwards?

I think one clamps the sight base onto the barrel, the other clamps the sight tunnel to the sight base. In other words, if you loosen it, you can rotate the tunnel on the sight base slightly, in case you like to hold a canted rifle.

As far as I can tell, the screw in question does nothing mechanical. The screws to control cant are in the front (or the rear, as there's no reason you can't mount the sight backwards). The "symmetrical sight picture" suggestion from salar600 makes the most sense, I think.

For leveling I would use an iris/insert with bars, since the spring wires inside are more sensitive to bending. Though in my case (shooting prone free rifle) I would just use a level :-)

The Anschutz m18 front sight does have the ability to cant, but that's not the adjustment screw. The two locking cant screws are located on the muzzle end between the bottom of the tube and the female dovetail.

Is to hold the mírage band if used on a center-fire rifle.

I have one just like it. Its just a "pretty" that makes the sight picture symmetrical

It's nice that someone else is asking this question and that there are some on here who also aren't aware of what that's form. I spent about an hour after I got my first sight like that trying to figure out what that was for, before I actually read about it and saw that it was only for symmetry in the sight picture. :)

That makes perfect sense, since your eye would be drawn to the part that's different. Thanks everyone!
