Need a fat .32 bullet?

Post by Rover »

With centerfire guns seeming to be so picky, and with bullets harder to find, I offer this: Hornaday makes a swaged semi-wadcutter; weight 90 grains and a diameter of .3135.

Seat the bullet backward in the case and you have a "boat-tail" wadcutter.

I used this trick succesfully when I packed a .44 mag. in Alaska. The bullet took up a lot of airspace in the large case so I could use a greatly reduced charge for shooting small game. Very accurate, too.

The trick with fat .32's is to make sure you use oversize dies, ie larger full length resizing die and neck sizer at .313 or .314.
Standard dies may swage soft lead down in size.
Good test is to load .314 then bullet pull and re measure diameter.

I tried that bullet in my Pardini 32 acp, the right way around. It was a disaster. At 25 yards, the group was the size of the paper, with the majority of the bullets going through the target completely sideways.

Not sure why they were so bad. One idea (posted here on TT) was that because the bullets were relatively long, they were getting swaged down by the 32 ACP case, which gets smaller farther back in the case.

I use the Hornady .314s in my hammerli 280. I quit sizeing my brass along time ago. I can seat them with finger pressure. Give it a try.

Dardas sells 32 wadcutters sized .312, .313, and .314. They fly great even at 50yds. http://www.dardascastbullets.com

good luck and good shooting
