Can I dry fire in the middle of a match?

Post by brent375hh »

Sometimes when I am having trouble with breaking a shot, it is good for me to dry fire a couple of times prior to continuing. Is this legal during an
AP or FP match?

Absolutely no problem providing:-

1) You don't discharge gas in the AP match.
2) It's not in a final.
3) You haven't been told to "STOP" (for people to go forward of the firing line for example).

Not only is it legal, but it's a damn good idea!

I've found that if I blow a shot for some unknown reason, I may do the same thing on the next shot or two. Now I dry fire at the first sign of trouble.

I was told by a rifle coach and several rifle shooters that the rules specifically prohibited them from dry firing during an ISSF match. Darned if I can find anything in the rules that says that.

If rifle shooters think they cannot do this, I think they're missing a valuable tool to get back into a groove during either training or a match.

Unless they were talking about during a final then they were all wrong.
