Removing Sight Black

Post by shadow »

I am trying to clean up my Steyr air pistol. This Sight Black is difficult to remove. I tried an alcohol wipe but it does not remove it all. What do other use?

I would try acetone. It is a component of some gun cleaners but is generally cheaper when you buy it as finger nail polish remover.

Put on your favourite light coloured shirt, it always seems to work for me, I always end up with some on my shirt..

I'd try some acetone, if that doesn't solve it try some varsol.

I use an old toothbrush, If that doesn't get it of it won't come off. It's worked for over 50 years for me.

On second thoughts I used to black my sights using a 'GunSmoke' (calcium carbide and water giving a sooty acetylene flame) therefore there was no carry over of oil or wax from a smokey flame that required a solvent.
