Cleaning Rod Guide for Anschutz Match 54

Hi guys,

Just bought an Anschutz Match 54 for my first rifle and have spent all week researching all the bits and pieces that i need to get (holy fook this could all mount up ....££££££)

I havent been able to find any reliable reviews on rod guides for this rifle though. I'm hoping that yous can make a few suggestions?

I would like to buy the best that I can get without spending a fortune. I'm going to buy a Parker Hale nylon coated .22 cleaning rod and was considering purchasing one of these guides.

MWerks guide is the best along with an Ivy polished SS .187 one piece rod. Jeff Madison at Mwerks makes the guide to fit the .187 Ivy rod perfectly. Guide is $35, rod is $50.

Just do a search for Ivy cleaning rods. and Mwerks.

Dewey is the popular coated rod used in the US. As far as the guide goes, you definately want to buy one. As for the best- it is a really basic tool so I can't imagine there being any difference at all in any of them except for the material. Everyone I know uses the ones made of nylon including myself. I have one friend who has been using the same one made from nylon and it has held up for over 20 years.

Does it matter how well the guide fits the rifle?

I remember reading somewhere, someone commenting on one brand being a better fit than another, and that this would stop any excess cleaning fluids runnimng down into the trigger etc.

You purchase them for a particular model rifle and I would think they all fit about the same but I really couldn't tell you since I haven't tried different brands. I would think that there may be a slight difference in sizes even within a particular brand and I doubt the tolerances are extremely tight. It is mainly used so you can get the cleaning rod in through the breach and making sure it enters properly and doesn't cause uneccessary wear. It is pretty low tech. I would just buy the cheapest or easiest to get and you will never think about it again

I would think that all the ones you've linked would do the job.
I have a similar one in Aluminium.

They will probably be a little slack - I've seen it suggested that if you can push a patch through the hole in the guide then the hole is too big. That seems a bit extreme to me.
If you get a plastic coated rod, just make sure that no bits of grit get embedded in the plastic...

With the Match 54 the problem is that your cleaning fluid can get under the loading ramp and seep through the hole in the action that the ejector lug goes through - into the bedding. I usually end up taking the action out of the stock anyway.

Thanks for the help guys. Think il get the plastic one then from Intershoot as I have a few other things to get from them and might as well save on the postage costs.

The link to the other web site has some very interesting info re. cleaning.

I have Match 54, and also have bought original plastic Anschutz Plastic Bore Guide. Have used it only 1 time (I'll sell it - if you want it..).

After that switched to VFG Firearm Pocket Set (this one: http://www.edinkillie.co.uk/ecatalog/vf ... l?cPath=40) with felts (http://www.edinkillie.co.uk/ecatalog/vf ... p-459.html) and never look back to the "regular" rod.
