I think a rifle tuned up for field target would be best. Steyr makes a few models in 177 and 22 caliber. FWB and Anschutz also make a bench rest rifle. You might want to try the yellow 54 airgun forum. There is tons of experience over there. I shoot 10 meter and silhouette, I don't personally shoot benchrest.

I have one for sale on this site. I have managed less than 1/4 inch groups at 25 yards. If you go to the benchrest match site http://www.phoenixbenchrest.com/ you will find that the FX Royale appears to be winning most of the matches. I agree that almost any rifle set up for Field Target would get you started.
