Practice without Air Pistol

Hi all,

So I currently attend college full time which means that I have to store my air pistol at the range. What's more, we only get practices about once a week. Is there some way to do practice shooting skills in my dorm without my actual pistol? I feel like every practice is the same: I get there, warm up, shoot and work on parts of my technique only for time to be up and I have to repeat it all next week. I'm keeping a shooting diary but besides that, is there something else?

Your grip can probably be removed with one cheeshead bolt. Take it off and use it for grip practice and "dry almost-firing". Not the best, but it should work.

Leave the gas tank at the range and take the rest of the pistol. Practice dry firing in your room. Depending on where you live this shouldn't be a problem since what you have is not/not a firearm. I might not make that argument in Japan or China or Singapore, but it will work in the UK. I kept my air pistol in my office desk or apartment and traveled on the Tube with no problems because it was legally not a prohibited or limited firearm. That's why the F-in-Pentagon mattered a lot. (King's College London where I taught had a rifle range for everything from 4.5mm air up to small-bore.

You can use a small weight (2-3lb) to practice your hold. Many people use the weight attached to a string on a stick (actually, plastic pipe works well). Hold the pipe out, wind up the string and wind it down.

I'm not certain if using a surrogate pistol, such as airsoft, would help. It might be one way to concentrate on sight alignment and trigger.

Probably the most important thing you can do without a pistol is mental training. Take the time to vividly picture yourself shooting. Concentrate on how it looks and feels to shoot a perfect 10. After a few sessions you will find yourself rejecting more shots (during actual firing) because your mind says they just aren't right.
