November NRA Regional - Charleston, SC

Hey Folks,

If you've never been to Charleston and think you might like to do so, we (the Palmetto Gun Club) hosts our NRA Conventional 3200 Prone Regional every November. This year it will be Nov 21-22. For information regarding the match, please contact William Smith (Citadel Rifle Coach) at 8436079892 or at rifle@citadel/edu.

This is most likely the last major match of 2010 and the last of the season. Weather here is usually beautiful and it's one of the nicest times to visit Charleston. I hope you'll consider joining me and a few other crack shots. Our range is challenging to say the least. Rarely the same conditions day to day - which always makes the competition interesting.

I'll be there! At least for the Iron Sights day, I have a paper due that Monday (eww). I was just at Palmetto this past weekend for the match.

Brian was asking me about this past weekend, didn't know about the 3200 next month. Let me see if I can wedge it into my schedule, I'd love to come down - just as long as I don't get the far right hand lanes again - if I do, I might as well not shoot! Any way to ensure I don't get stuck over there, Bart?

Hi Todd,

Yes. There is a way. Sign up as fast as you can! You can download the program and entry form on Pronematch.com. Fill it out and send that thing in. The sooner the better.

I make it a point to practice on varying spots on this range. I have never seen a variation in scores. Paul Gideon won the Blackhawk on point 36 (which is about the farthest to the right you can get) three years ago. This range is the single most challenging range I've ever been on - including Perry. The coastline breezes and the Gulfstream make sure we all get tested. Soooooo.... Just git yer ass down here and leave your excuses in NC! :)

Besides, you know you will have more to worry about than your range position. Did I mention I am shooting this match?! :) Bp

I love it! I shot off point 39 before, and due to wind vortexes on the right, ended the Blackhawk a few years ago at -174. Yes, -174, I won't forget that. Considering my normal scores at the moment are typically -10 to -15 for a 1600, I was a bit miffed. One of the guys from the range asked later if I had been on the far right side...

Got the PDF from William and gave him my info, said I could pay once I got to the match. I may just slide a couple of Jacksons into an envelope and get it over with.

Guess I had better start putting more time aside to practice. With this past match here in Raleigh, I hadn't fired a round since the match the month before. Took a new job in April that is consuming all of my time. If I don't practice, I know Abi's going to beat me one of these times, she's really doing great.

Glad to hear you are coming.

Whew! That Blackhawk sounds like it must have been a nightmare. The trick to our range is keeping a VERY close eye on the mirage. We typically have an 11 to 1pm switch with an occasional sidestep to 3 o'clock. You MUST use the entire set of flags to keep them in the middle.

Who knows, maybe we'll get lucky and have no wind at all on a cloudy, overcast day. Yeah right!! :)

Well of course I am gona be there!! I don't understand what ya'll think is so difficult about that range. But then again, didn't I beat all ya'll at the Black Hawk that year? hehe Having flags at every target is very nice, you just have to pay a little attention.

As my memory serves - you won the iron sight day, but you got stomped overall. So SOMETHING about this range got you by the short hairs! Heh.

I think Central Florida is the toughest range I've ever competed at with Fairfax Rod and Gun second. It's actually a tie in my mind between Palmetto and Sir Walter for third. Palmetto has more wind velocity, but Sir Walter switches far more quickly and has more unreadable wind patterns. You can only blame yourself at Palmetto for not keeping up with the wind.

What makes Central Florida a challenge? Thinking of going there in a few months for the first time. I agree that Palmetto is readable if you pay attention to all the tells and are patient.

If switchy ranges are F-1 race cars, then Central Florida is a draggester fishtailing out of control. I've had 100y metric bulls down there with a 7 out each side, one from a gust, the other from a let off. The wind starts about 10am, and then smacks you in the face for the rest of the day.

The first time I went down there, I won irons day with a 1511(metric), 2nd was 1501, 3rd was in the 1480s. My best score in 3 matches down there is a 1545ish, and I was proud of that one.

You can still do well down there if you pay attention to the point your eyes bleed. I've shot a number of 99 bulls at 100y in conditions others were happy to hold 8 ring.

As for where to stay, I highly suggest the La Quinta on Jamaican Ct off International Dr. You are in Florida after all, so take advantage of the bar by the pool and hot tub and there is a huge array of dining choices within walking distance. You'll need it after the range beats your face in for the day.

This represents the cast of characters from the 2008 Regional. As I recall, everyone shot a 1600 the first day.

Yeah, I lost to you by one point overall, big deal. That was the first time, I every shot a master score and the first match, I ever won. I agree with Soupy, the wind isn't that bad, you just have to keep up with it.
