Hammerli SP20 .32 cal conversion

Post by PFribley »

Recently purchased an SP20 .32 cal conversion for my SP20rrs. First time out was not good. Using .32 cal reloaded waddcutters the rounds kept getting stuck on the feed ramp. Didn't have any new factory ammo. Had to order some. The persion I purchesed it from said it worked good. Questions:

Do these conversions work???

Do the conversions need gumsmithed???

Do the mags. need tuned????

Is Fiocchi 100gr. good ammo to use???

Help???

feed ramp needed

Is the .32 feed ramp installed on your .22 SP20? If not, what you described will happen all the time.

Hi Fred,

The only feed ramp I have is the one in the barrel that came with the conversion??????

There is a separate part that goes between the mag and the barrel - without that, nothing will work. SP20 are generally easy to get to work and pretty reliable, as long as nothing breaks. Mags are great, among the best there are. Fiocchi is soft enough, and should have enough crimp to function ok. So I'd look at how the whole thing is put together first.

I mentioned it because the used conversion unit I bought was missing the little additional feed ramp, and I didn't even know that it was supposed to be installed. If you installed the feed ramp that came with the conversion unit, then please disregard my comments - the problem must be something else.

32 Conversion

Post by fc60 »

Greetings,

The Haemmerli SP-20 has a groove diameter of 0.3135". Fiocchi may shoot well; but, my choice of commercial would be the Lapua 98 grain HBWC.

Use Fiocchi or Lapua brass and reload with H&N 0.314 diameter bullets with 1.4 grains of VV N310 (three-ten).

With 0.314" cast bullets I have had reasonable results with 1.6-1.7 grains of Winchester WST Powder.

I have owned one for several years and it has been quite reliable.

With kind regards,

Dave

Looked in my SP20 manual. Page 18 itemizes the .32cal conversion. Called a "ramp" and "special pin". Items 150 and 155 on the picture. Guess I didn't get these. LOL

Feed Ramp

Post by fc60 »

Greetings,

Forgot to mention my conversion did not come with the feed ramp. I purchased one from Larry's Guns.

Once installed, the 22 lr conversion slips over it. Once installed, you forget about it.

Cheers,

Dave

Seems to be conflicting info on the .32 conversion. Page 18 in my Hammerli book gives an itemized description of the conversion. Describs a ramp and special pin in the conversion. Drama is all over. The person that I purchased the conversion from has the ramp still in his pistol. He didn't know it was there. Doesn't want to remove it. Going to return my money. Very graciuos of him. All good now. Guess I will have to purchase a .32 cal target pistol!!! Getting another pistol isn't all bad. LOL

Purchased a SP20 a little while ago and 22 conversion arrived this week, instructions said to remove the 32 feed ramp but without an appropriate roll pin punch I thought I would search the net and see what info I could find.
Guess where I ended up?
Installed the 22 conversion with the 32 ramp in place and no drama, will make switching cals much simplier
thank you :)

Have you looked at Pardini .32? Pardini USA is getting ready to launch a .32 ACP version. The ammo showed really good tests and is cheaper to reload or buy. Because of the shape it is also easier to feed in the chamber, comparing to .32 SW. I shot the prototype at Camp Perry and won the Rapid Fire match of the Center Fire day. Great gun with not much more recoil than the .22 LR Pardini.

Do you use a HBWC bullet in the 32ACP?
