steadiness

Post by mike stephens »

hello there,
i am relatively new to AP shooting, i know concentrating on sight allignment and trigger is important and that steadiness comes by practice. but how can one increase the steadiness of the pistol by working on it (i mean what specific exercise should i work upon)?

thanks.

The same as with any sport; eat right and exercise.

Holding, as in dry firing, for up to a minute to train the specific muscles.

There's more, and I know others will chime in on this one.

To improve your hold steadiness you need to work on strengthening your shooting arm and improve your balance/stability. For your arm, tracing drills are very helpful. On the backs of three targets draw a big X, circle, and a cross, one target for each shape. Get into your shooting position then begin tracing the shapes with your sights, keeping the sights aligned and continuously squeezing the trigger as you move. I generally trace one shape about 3-4 times before my arm gets tired and I let it down. Three sets per shape does it for me. What this drill does is let you control the weight of the gun throughout the steps of your shot process so that you don't have to drop into your hold area and waste effort stabilizing when you get there.

To improve your balance you want to work on your core, which is what I think jackh is referring to. I don't know any excercises that really work this area out, so if anyones got any, please post.

A good core strength exercises is to build a bridge. on the ground in a pushup position but with your elbows on the ground and hold your hands together for support. holding your body straight and not letting your hips sag. hold this for a certain amount of time. this only works if you have reasonambule upper body strength tho.
