It's very hard for a "new" shooter, thinking about a first jacket, etc., to know how to tell if a jacket is ISSF-legal, NRA-legal, or USAS-legal. There just don't seem to be any pictures out there or general descriptions that I could find.
Could somebody give me some advice and point me at 'typical' NRA and ISSF legal clothing and differences? Are there some sets that are legal for both sanctioning bodies?

ISSF rules are the most strict. If you're legal there, you're legal just about anywhere. ISSF coats are canvas/leather blends for the most part with buttons. There are rules pertaining to pretty much every dimension of the coats from length, thickness, tightness of fit, etc. USAS follows ISSF rules.

NRA does not have as strict of rules for coats, but "NRA Coats" are not necessarily ISSF legal. I've actually never looked at the NRA rules, but I think pretty much anything short of a metal and wood construction of a coat is legal. There are no tightness regulations, and you can have straps, rather than buttons, to really get that coat good and tight. There are no thickness regulation either.

I have both kinds of jackets. The ISSF jacket has buttons that close it. The NRA jacket has straps that close the jacket. Hop over to the ISSF website and look at the rule book. There are 13 rules about the coat. the NRA rulebooks have 1.

NRA jackets will be less custom than ISSF jackets. You can get a Monard jacket that you take 26 measurements for. You pick what materials you want and where you want them. You get to pick what colors you want. But it will also cost you $1200.
If I was you I would just get a Freeland or somthing similar.
