or any electronic trainer. Will there be a significant difference between mounting the sensor at the end of the barrel vs 4-6 inches back from the muzzle? Does it matter?

It doesn't matter.
I mount it in the safest spot to protect it from getting bumped.

Agreed, although I mount it as close to the end as possible (partly so as to keep the sensor 'clear' of the shadow of the barrel).
