Re: 2016 National Match schedule is out
The NRA not supporting the Smallbore National Matches is kind of like Hollywood not supporting the Academy Awards if it didn't make a profit. The Smallbore National Matches should be a showcase of competitive shooting. If the NRA won't support it, why should the rest of the public support the legiti...

Re: 2016 National Match schedule is out
Thanks HAP for the response. I was reading something online about the Championships, and I think the author was paraphrasing the official announcement, and didn't make it very clear, at least to me. It made no sense to me. When I was very actively shooting 25 years ago, my recollection was that the ...

Re: Infighting at USA Shooting
Once again I am getting in the middle of this when I am not really current, but I can tell you this: I always figured that ANY orginization or business like USA Shooting needs some continual change in management to get fresh ideas and keep things advancing. It also seems like the Shooting sports hav...

Re: 2016 National Match schedule is out
I am walking into the middle of this, and I am not current on all the info, as I haven't been shooting for a few years. I was thinking of starting shooting again next year, and was planning my schedule for next year. So I looked up info about dates for Perry/smallbore National Matches. Based on info...

Sam Gates smallbore sight supply
Upon searching past threads on this sight, I have discovered that there may be additional current sources to purchase another Sam Gates or Gates derivitiave sight. I would like to get a backup sight or two. Does HP sight still make the sight? I particularily like the version that is designed to dire...

Gates sight
I have never heard of the glideline corp, but Sam was from Waynesboro, PA, so Im suspect it was likely connected to him. I suspect the 060 was the serial number. My sight says Sam Gates, I think #532, also says 1/6 on it as I wanted 1/6 minute clicks as that was 3 clicks per ring on the internationa...

Bill
Oops. Didn't know. He gave me a bit of coaching when I was shooting at Prado, Chino in the late 1980's-1990's. He autographed a copy of his book for me when it came out.
Sorry to hear about him gone. He was a pleasure to work with.

I didn't want to say too much, as I didn't know if something like someone passed away. I have seen that on another site.

New black background on this site?
Am I the only one that has a black background with white lettering on this site?
Is there a reason for this?
If not, let me just say it is horrible. This is extremely hard to read.

I'm with Rob on this one. You don't want to learn new bad habits. But you may be able to use it for mental training, getting into position, and learning to feel what your body is doing, and learning to train your body to relax, and be able to know when it isn't relaxed. With a coat, you may have bee...

To Tim S: Yes, you have some valid points about my generalizations. But most people in the real world understand that intuitavely, as most comments written in any forum are quick notes thought out, not something that was composed over hours of time, and then carefully proofreaded by a clerical staff...

Kenny, I sympathize with your plight. Barrels may be easier for us in the US. In the last few years I bought a Lilja 27" barrel and a Lilja 21" barrel for a 2013 Anschutz, for $325 and $375. I haven't installed them yet, but it is a 15 minute process on the 2013. No gunsmith needed. I beli...

You said it succinctly, gwsb My not frequently cleaning barrels can be classified as a combination of lazy, and not seeing a huge difference. Also, the ammo wasted on fouling a cleaned barrel. I would definately clean after a match if the conditions were humid, or the gun got wet, or I think I clean...

Nope, different Jeff. I agree, stainless is not rust proof: just resistant. However, you must have your gun in very different conditions than mine, as mine has no signs of rust after 25+ years. I would, however, typically wipe the outside with a silicone cloth before putting gun away. And before goi...

barrel damage
I am one of the no barrel cleaning variety. A couple of reasons why I think I can get away with it: I live in a dry region, Los Angeles. I suspect it is easier on un-cleaned barrels than a humid region. My barrels are stainless steel. I use a plastic coated rod, and I am very careful to clean it bef...

X2 what Matt said. I also normally chronograph my shots when I narrow it down to a few lots and go shoot outdoors. If I have a couple of lots that shoot equally well, I would use the best chrono standard deviation as a tie bereaker. Normally I have SD's of 5-7 for 50 shot groups. But one time I had ...

ammo testing
If the portable stands are what I know as a "machine rest", some caution is in order. I don't know what facilities are at Eley, but I suspect it is a heavy machine rest, inside a closed room/tunnel? The point is, is it not outside in the weather? I do not believe a machine rest is the &quo...

cleaning
I wouldn't normally expect a few patches and a brush to damage a bore. The damage usually would come from someone being careless with the way it is done, such as poshing a dirty rod/brush through the bore, not using a guide, pulling the rod back to fast/hard/ whatever and nicking the crown, etc. Thi...

Barrel cleaning/ new barrel
Over the years I have heard stories about barrel erosion from Eley - usually from guys trying to sell me RWS R50 ammo.... My barrel is a Schneider installed by Karl Kenyon in 1987. It has 125,000 to 150,000 rounds through it. I clean it maybe every 3000-5000 rounds. I have used pretty much Eley Tene...
