Prone guns

I completely agree with the above. A new shooter or a growing junior would be well served by the new adjustable guns. A new shooter will not know what the gun is supposed to fit like, and needs a year or two to figure it out. But when a shooter reaches expert or master level, my thoughts are that th...

Ammo testing

I start at 100 yards because, well, it is a quick and dirty way to screen a number of lots of ammo. If it shoots at 100 yds, then most likely it will shoot at 50 yds. It is just easier to see the spread at 100 yds. However, sometimes you will find a magic lot that tunes in better at 50 yds. Back in ...

Prone gun

I'm thinking some people have missed one of the core ideas of my statement about guns: I am referring to PRONE ONLY guns. That was the original thread question. Not that somebody wants to shoot prone, and maybe a little 3-P on the side. And I still stand by my statements above. And yes, it IS normal...

New prone guns

I am going to come out of left field here, but hear me out... And these opinions are regarding prone guns. Many more adjustments are necessary for 3-P shooting. I was in the same position a year ago - stopped prone shooting in 1992. Wanted to start again in 2006-2007. Figured my 1985 vintage 1813 An...

Ammo

Not a chance! Welcome to the world of ammo testing. Get a bunch of different lots of ammo, shoot prome with a powerful scope with a sandbag under your arm, start at 100 yards, confirm at 50 yds. Have fun! By the way, if that ammo you are shooting is the top of the line stuff (read expensive) and you...

Prone rear sight

A very popular sight in the 1980's and 1990's for prone shooting was a Gates sight. Made by Sam Gates in his garage, I believe, and who I think passed away a few years back. They are beefy but well made, a bit heavy, but who cares. But don't use them for high power, as they are too heavy to withstan...

Shooting in Los Angeles

While the instruments may be different (airgun vs firearm), they aren't any different in the City of Los Angeles. I think you can get busted (misdemeanor?) if you are shooting an airgun, just like a firearm, in a place other than a designated shooting range in the City of Los Angeles. Like your back...

Shooting in Los Angeles

The reason it is difficult to find shooting venues in Los Angeles is because much of the los Angeles area is openly hostile to firearms ownership and shooting in general. The most recent victim was that range near the 605/210 fwy, I think it was called Fish Canyon? With that said, the Prado matches ...

50m rifle

I definately would not base my decision to pursue rifle shooting based on one try! Try it a few times, you may like it. I think you were looking for some feedback, that may give you some idea that you are a "natural" at 50m rifle, and so should then pursue it. Well, I don't know what a nat...

50m scores

??? what is medium?? It is an OK score for your first try. Your scores will go up rapidly. Assuming you are not an 8 year old kid. In that case, I would say it is great! You will probably notice a few things that will make a big difference in your scores. The scores will go up rapidly for a period o...

Reloading in Los Angeles

You have pretty much only 1 choice Martin B Redding in Culver City. It is an easy drive about 5-10 miles North of LAX up the incredibly busy 405 freeway. The last time I heard, there are only 7 gun stores in all of 8 million resident City of Los Angeles: 5 are Big 5 Sporting goods, that don't sell s...

Rocky Mountain prone scores - Tamas ties National Record.

Can't help you with all of the scores, but on Friday that damn Tom Tamas shot a perfect 600 prone! That guy is shooting great. I heard there were a couple of 599's, and I remember Steve Goff had shot a 596 and a 598. Matt Emmons had a 598 Friday. I think Martinov shot a 595 Friday. Good matches, but...

What is the best smallbore prone rifle? PRONE ONLY

If anyone is still interested in what rifles the top shooters are using, here is a current sampling: I'm currently at the OTC in Colorado at the Rocky Mountain Championships. Yesterday, for fun, they had a 2 times finals to eliminate 8 of 16 shooters, then a shootoff to elininate the rest one by one...

Prone rifle

Regarding response by Waltherman, I agree a club shooter would be less likely to want to test ammo, but it still is a good idea, as the lower grades of ammo can vary widely. I guess it really is up to the individual as to how well they want to do. If you spend the big bucks for a top rifle, it seems...

Aquila ammo

While the equipment may be the same, it is the labor operating the equipment that can make a difference. And if I had a choice between something made in Germany as opposed to made in Mexico, than it is no contest. Sure, Germany will cost more. That said, the determining factor is YOUR gun. I bought ...

Air Pistol

Closest match that I know of is at Prado Olympic Park in Chino, about 60 miles from you. They shoot air pistol and free pistol once a month, I forget which Sunday of the month. Search posts here for Sandy Santibanez, as he is the match director, and a good guy. They usually get 10-25 shooters. I hav...

Ammo shelf life

I have heard of 20+ year old ammo shooting fine. So don't worry about buying extra ammo. It is not going to go bad in a year or two for sure. I have some 20 year old Eley Club that I just shot, and i shoots exactly like I remember it did years ago. But it was also stored indoors, in a closet. Avoid ...

Gun cleaning

Regarding the rifle needing 20-50 rounds after cleaning to settle down: Having to foul the barrel anytime you start shooting is nothing new. Even with a dirty barrel. I was shooting my new Anschutz 2013 today in a match, and the barrel consistantly needed 5-7 rounds before it would print in group. S...

Ammo

Some of the local prone shooters at LAR&R are shooting the Wolf Match Extra, and are having good luck with it. Particularily for the price.

I think it is going for about $400 a case

It may be a case of a very good "bang for the buck"

Ammo testing

My recommendation on testing at 100 yards was based on the assumption that you were shooting American conventional prone, shot at 50 yds, 50 meters, and 100 yards. It wasn't a recommendation to test at twice your normal shooting distance. However, I would suspect shooting the ammo at 100 yards will ...
