The other day I was reading a condemnation of compensators for lead build up. I seem to remember that the rapid fire pistols (in the 22 short era) had vent holes in the top of the barrel. If you really do look at the line and not at the target, through enough repetitions, your brain will start looking for the front sight when the gun comes up, rather than the target.
