One other issue with the Ruger is that it is unlikely that you "will shoot it forever". MIT used them for the physical education pistol classes many years ago, and they wore out much faster than the High Standards and Model 41's they have used at other periods. Maybe the new ones are bette...

You are still stuck with the problem that the bore line of the Ruger is close to an inch higher than that of any of the magazine-forward European guns. Also, a one-size-fits-all molded grip isn't the answer unless it happens to fit YOU. The European pistols come in at least three grip sizes typicall...

One thing to watch out for when doing ammunition test like this is that switching between ammos without cleaning or "re-conditioning" can produce odd results. I don't know what is going on, but I've definitely seen situations where things don't settle down until I've fired at least 15 to 2...

I have an older Pardini FP (PG-75?) that has a tight chamber. If I don't keep it clean, I regularly get fired cases stuck in the chamber. I've learned that I can easily pop them out by pushing the open mouth of a fired case down between the rim & the breech face. That will usually pop it free, a...

I'm not familiar with the other two, but I'd be very careful about the Walther. Make sure you can get it serviced & can get parts. I had a CP1, and I could no longer get service parts over ten years ago. Walther isn't very good about maintaining a supply of parts for pistols that are no longer m...

Getting parts is a serious consideration, but it's too bad you gave up on the Benelli. There are now several sources of parts for them in the US, including Brownells. They typically don't stock them, but they can special order them and their prices are competitive. I wonder if they could special ord...

First question, are you right or left handed? Thumbing for a righthanded shooter would push the shots to the right, not the left. As someone pointed out, it's hard to decipher what's going with a target with so many shots. You could be doing several things at different times. A couple of recommendat...

I would second the recomendation for the Pardini. Hammerli was legendary for the support they gave pistols they hadn't made in decades. Walther IMHO is notorious for NOT providing long term support for their pistols. The MIT pistol team had a a couple of older GSP's in the mid to late 80's. Accordin...

I'm just getting back into AP shooting after many years off. I have a new Steyr LP50 with the heavy trigger, which I'm mostly planning on using for training. I have a Mornini for regular AP competition, although the LP50 shoots every bit as well. From what Pilkguns & many others sell, the approa...

Thanks! That clears up the parts mysteries. Now I just have to figure out the trigger. I have some whittling to do on the grip & re-balancing with barrel weights, and I can try studying the trigger diagram & instructions in the meantime. I have no idea if the heavy trigger is significantly d...

New Steyr LP50 Owner With a Few Questions

I just got an LP50, and I'm trying to sort out a few issues. There are several pieces that came with it that don't seem to be mentioned in the manual. 1) A black U-shaped plastic piece. This looks about the right size to fit inside the grip, and would raise the frame of the pistol about half a cm re...

I used one quite a bit a few years back, and have been meaning to start up again. Mine got harder & harder to start because of dirt build up inside. I think it was mostly dust worn off from the internal sliding parts. In any event, I flushed it out with soapy water, rinsed it with warm water &am...

I have an MP90S, which shoots very well. The only problem I've ever had with it is a busted firing pin after about 5K rounds. However, they can't be easily dry-fired like a Pardini. I've tended to steer away from Walthers because they don't tend to support their older pistols very well. If they chan...

Yes, Greg, thanks for all your work on this. It was critical to get this out of the legislature before this year's session ended (this week). I haven't heard if there is any sort of time issue once it gets to the Governor's desk. He's busy dealing with Big Dig issues, and I just hope it doesn't die ...

The more you dwell (in practice & in matches) on the good shots, the easier they will become. The same is true of bad shots. Ignoring bad shots in a match is good advice, but if you can concentrate on positive corrective action for whatever is going wrong, that can be helpful as well. The trick ...

One technique I've found useful is to acquire my sight picture above the black. I get everything lined up and sharply in focus on the target with the black just below my sights, and then lower my sights to my sub-6 hold before squeezing off the shot. I've found that I can ensure my focus is where it...

Now that Walther owns Hammerli, I would watch out. Walther has a bad habit of not supporting their old pistols for very long. They seem to have the attitude that everyone should buy a new pistol (from them of course) every five years or ten years and throw out the old one.

That's a different style from the Saf-T-Trainers. They might be worth a try. The only thing that bugs me is the claim that they have an internal spring, which is clearly only for the center fire sizes. Presumably that's just somebody at Midway not paying much attention. They've been around a while, ...

The most common plastic dummy rounds available in the US are orange. They are made from a moderately brittle plastic, and the rim can chip from firing pin impact and then they can drop little plastic bits into the action. I'd love to find a source for similar rounds that are made from something toug...

I had looked at the California DOJ web site, and even did a couple searches. I couldn't find a list there, and had to hit the web at large to come up with anything. I'm glad they have a much broader list than the one I found. I went back and tried again, and this time I found it right off: http://ca...
