New CMP Rules: How Are They Working?

What has been happening at CMP matches since the new rules came into effect? The new rules are (in my own words): 6.3.2: Your 1911 can have lots of previously banned modifications. 6.3.4: You can shoot a "service pistol" that isn't a 1911 or an M9. 6.6.2: You can use any safe ammo as long ...

I think the idea of a one minute pause between "targets" sounds reasonable. That shouldn't result in any more brass rat mischief than we have now. There's also going to have to be some sort of transition after the slow fire portion of the national match course. I expect they'll keep the ta...

Faster Relays with Electronic Scoring

If we assume, for the sake of discussion, that electronic targets are coming to the National Matches at Camp Perry, one consequence that I think we can all agree on is that the automation of the scoring and the elimination of target replacement should reduce the time required to shoot the matches. I...

I agree that the revised rules, if adopted, should increase turnout for the matches. There aren't many shooters outside of the Bullseye community who have a CMP-compliant, accurized M1911, but there are plenty who have a tuned .45 1911 with adjustable sights that could be competitive in an EIC match...

Proposed CMP Rule Changes for Service Pistol

While I was waiting out the lightning delay at Perry on revolver day, another shooter showed me an email from the CMP with a list of proposed rule changes. There were several of them but the one that really stood out to me was an expansion of the definition of "service pistol". Under the n...

Has the old target system been scrapped already, or could it be pulled out of storage next July if the new electronic targets aren't ready to go by then?

Oddly enough, this year was the first time in a long time that I didn't notice any problems with the turning target system at Camp Perry. I didn't see any range alibis, nor did I notice any ranges shut down for repairs. That and the cool, dry (by Perry standards) weather made for an especially pleas...

I tried the electronic targets at Perry and came away wanting to try them in an actual match. Just shooting a few practice strings on a system set up for ISSF shooting didn't give me enough of a feel for how MegaLink would work for Bullseye. Why is there so much concern about things being different,...

.22 Revolver Questions

I've been thinking about getting a .22 LR revolver so I can shoot an entire 2700 with wheelguns. I'd also like to be able to practice my revolver technique with a .22. I have a few questions for those who have been down this path... 1) What is a realistic accuracy goal for a .22 revolver (probably a...

For what it's worth, when I shoot a 1911, I don't rest my thumb on the safety. The meaty pad at the base of the thumb is clamped onto the pistol but the thumb itself is just hanging in space, relaxed.

The digits of the hand like to work together but trigger control is not a team sport.

What is the advantage of getting the sight line close to the bore line? For other types of shooting, a low sight line helps when shooting over cover or at very close range. Neither of those situations in going to arise in a bullseye match. Is it that getting the dot closer to the "fulcrum of wo...

Ah, I see! Thank you for the explanation. That does look like a solid base. My very first wad gun was built by the late Harold Johnson, retired USMC armorer, using a Weigand frame mount. I got the pistol second hand several years after it was built. Although it was an excellent wad gun in most respe...

If the mount attaches to the base plate, to what does the base plate attach? Is it welded onto the dust cover?

Accuracy X 1911 Pistols

Does anyone here own a pistol from Accuracy X? I discovered their website earlier this year and then visited their table on Commercial Row at Camp Perry. Steve Huff, the owner/spokesman/team captain was there and I got to talk with him. He's quite an accomplished shooter (Distinguished x3, at least ...

I've seen several references to the 9mm wadguns needing to be loaded fairly hot to be accurate. Is it possible to use a lighter load for the short line? The 10 ring is a relatively large target at 25 yards.

As far as "duckboards" or pallets in the mud- not allowed by NRA rules. Is this a reference to rules 5.1 and 5.2 and the prohibition on "artificial support"? That's a good point, but note how rule 5.1 defines the "ground": "All references to "the ground"...

I've had very good results with the Remington 185 grain jacketed SWC bullets. They don't seem to be available, though. Same goes for the Hornady 185 gr JSWC: good bullets but hard to find now. If plain cast or swaged lead bullets aren't an option for you, you might try coated bullets. The 185 grain ...

The NRA can't, Camp Perry is operated by the state of Ohio. Duckboards wouldn't be a permanent range feature. They would just be temporary wooden platforms, similar to pallets, laid down when the benches are set out and removed when the benches are put back into storage. I don't see why the OHNG wo...

Would it be possible to add a couple more inches of concrete to the hut foundations? That wouldn't do anything about the muck outside but at least it would keep the interiors above the water line.
