New Rules
There were some pretty drastic proposals circulating for rule changes post Olympics. Anyone know when these will be finalized? I am holding off on ordering new junior equipment until I see what is happening to pants and boots. My understanding is that there will be ISSF meeting sometime September. I...

More BS... but, perhaps, progress...
I spoke with Vicki at CMP this morning and expressed some of my concerns regarding Orion, chief among them the 2 point penalty in rule 8.5.5 for scoring protests that are not upheld. I was able to give her something to consider that apparently went unnoticed when the rule was written as a measure of...

Let me start off stating again that I do not believe ORION is perfect, but neither is hand scoring and neither are ESTs. I do believe ORION is better than hand scoring overall. I agree, I have seen several instances of problematic scoring with all three systems. Still, I believe that hand scoring (...

I've done much of what you suggested regarding prior set-up, etc. So far as the idea of scoring the targets myself and then sending them in for official scoring, it kind of defeats the purpose as I would not be allowed to plug close shots so in a close match the awards placement would come down to n...

Holding a Match-- Check List
While I haven't ever really sat down to write out a list, I do have a mental checklist developed from 26 years of running matches. Things to have on hand: -Rule Book that your match will be run under -script for your range officer to follow when running range-- include times -scoring gauges (for the...

Awesome video on aspiring shooting athlete
Check out this video on Rhode Island shooter, Catherine Green. A 17-year-old high school senior, Catherine was the J1 National Champion at this year's USAS/CMP National Junior Olympic 3P Air Rifle Championships. She also set a National Record in kneeling with a 200-18. A great all around kid, she ha...

Junior Shooter featured in National Hockey Magazine
It isn't often we see junior shooters featured in national publications. Here's an article from USA Hockey magazine about a young shooter who uses hockey for cross training. Though it has the usual distance related errors, it is a positive article that holds shooting to be a viable sport. http://www...

Historical Range Under Attack-- You Can Help!
Historic Blue Trail Range in Wallingford, CT, is currently fighting for its very existence. Battling biased reporting, half-assed investigating, and a law suit from a greedy developer, they need YOUR help if they are to take a stand. In operation since the 1940's, there is a good chance that this ra...

When in doubt, check the rulebook
When in doubt, check the rulebook (it's even on-line). According to the most recent NRA Rulebook, there are separate percentages for each type of 3P shooting (as well as separate numbers for outdoor vs. indoor) http://www.nrahq.org/compete/RuleBooks/SBR/sbr-w19.pdf Look under "OUTDOOR CONVENTIO...

3P Scores
According to page 21 of the 2008 NRA National Champonships Program & Entry Information, the minimum scores are: Master 1104 Expert 1044 Sharpshooter 960 Marksman 900 Though I did not find it in the program, I believe that the 3P Course of fire on the A-23 would probably be called "Conventio...

aperture size
The size aperture you use is going to be dependent upon a number of factors: -lighting conditions on the range -the amount of "white" that your daughter is most comfortable seeing in her sight picture -whether or not she uses an extension tube -what kind of hold she has I would start by sa...

Jacket Rules
GT, You can read the rule yourself by going to the CMP website and then accessing the rulebook. Look on page 14, under rule 4.6.1. It'll tell you that the National Standards Rules are basically the same as any International match rules (USAS and NRA). This really isn't all that new. Investing in an ...

There are more considerations than just the pistol grip. The cheekpiece is going to not only present the sharp side rather than the contoured side, but, if you need to move the cheekpiece in or out laterally, it may not be able to go over enough for you to get in a good head position behind the rear...

10 M target height (air rifle)
You can access the rules on the USAS website. Target heights are discussed in the "General Technical Rules." For air rifle you're looking at 1.40 m to the center of the target with a plus/minus of 0.05m. Note, too, that if you are setting up a range for multiple shooters, each firing point...

limitations are not always descriminatory
For the two years that my husband and I lived in New York, we participated in the Empire State Games (1995 and 1996). They had just reduced the number of team members from each region from three to two, and, just as now, the air rifle spots were available only to those who were already going to the ...

Finals
In order to maintain a presence in the Olympics, each sport needs to be as media friendly and as exciting as possible. The finals were added to International events to ensure that the media would be willing to cover what was perceived by the uninitiated as a 'boring' sport. What could be more exciti...
