David makes a great point about checking to ensure your medication is not banned. I have updated WADA lists at all of my providers offices and they are well aware not to prescribe anything that is not on the approved and current year WADA list.

Beta Blockers are illegal however, ACE Inhibitors are not. I have (had) high blood pressure and, depending on what kind of physical condition you are in, it could have an impact on performance. My blood pressure was considerably worse than your current level but with a small dose of Lisinopril (10 m...

Hi Richard, I would love to see those papers if you can find them. My research tracked the overall academic achievement of students in my College Geometry course at my university so in that respect, it indeed has a bit of a narrow focus. The impetus for the study was that students always complain ab...

Although this does not apply directly to shooting, in my work as a university mathematics professor, I just published an article in the Far East Journal of Mathematcial Education which concludes that the time of day does not have a significant effect on student learning. The study utlized four years...

Shooters at the World Masters Games
The World Masters Games was a really class act and I enjoyed myself throughout the entire tournament. Altough I managed only an 8th place finish in air pistol, I learned a great deal as a result of the experience. In terms of our hosts, the Australians are clearly the friendliest people I have ever ...

Thanks for the great endorsement Jack!! I shoot 10m at my own outdoor range in my back yard. It has an electronic target carrier, etc and is a good range and an easy range to build. Unfortunately there is not much that is available in the SATX area for 10m. The facilities at Lackland were available ...

Those look like fun matches but why would you want to shoot 60 shots in 60 minutes? That seems, at least to me, like a very rushed match and I am not sure I see the value add in terms of transferring that experience to an actual match where (at least I do) you take 95-100 minutes. Another source for...

If you are simply looking for practice ammunition at a really good price you should visit the CMP website at http://www.odcmp.com where you can buy a case (5000 rounds) of Aguila 22 LR for under $189 although, looking now at the website, it does indicate that the ship time could be a few months. Sti...

Alan, The beauty of these games is that you will compete against shooters that are in your own age category. IF you are 65 years old then you will be in an age category that includes 60 - 69 year old shooters or something similar (don't hold me to that exact asge breakdown) but certainly you would n...

Hi! I am a member of the Boerne Shooting Club (Schuetzenverein) here in Boerne, Texas. We are the oldest active continuous shooting club in the United States. We hold practice shoots 3 times per month and a medal shoot once a month. In addition, we compete against other Schuetzenverein's in the Hill...

I am with you on that. Sometimes it is tough to go through the daily grind that a coach has setup for you, I know it wears me out. As I said though, it all depends upon where you eventually want to wind up. I know very few athletes at the top levels that are not coached and while I may never make it...

Me personally, I take a 2 month off-season each year, normally during the months of November and December. I shoot a very busy tournament schedule between February and October (normally 11 - 14 tournaments) so for me the break is not only nice, but necessary for me to rest, reflect on the past year,...

i guess previously i was training under the idea that practice makes perfect. if i can improve during my training/practice sessions, no doubt i would see an improvement in my competitions. but this does not seem to be the case. You are correct, that is not the case. Practice does not make perfect, ...
