Re: Stance

The MEC book is good. If you can find or borrow a copy of Yuryev's "Competitive Shooting", I highly recommend it. The Soviets did a LOT of research on the subject.

Short form: Whatever brings the gun on target without stress is best.

Re: New(ish) shooter with questions on sights

I shot with a front sight painted fluorescent orange for many years. Abandoned it only because MLAIC rules limit you to white or black. Having said that, a sub-six hold (and mine is a deep sub-six) works quite well. I persuaded one of our shooters to try it...and his scores promptly went up signific...

Re: Amazing Exhibition Shots and gun accuracy

Many years ago, Walter Winans wrote a book on revolver shooting. He covered exhibition shooting in one chapter...it took skill, but also not making the shot too difficult. Hit the ace of a card deck, for example (a 9-ring shot in AP). Use a .44 revolver, and it's not a terribly challenging shot. Or ...

Re: 25m RFP Proposed changes

I agree that it's a done deal. I'm not sure it's a bad deal. RF bays are scarce, and there's no real possibility of a competitor owning a portable one. A single turning target is far easier to procure.

Order the pistol. You can use it for RF or SP.

Re: Why are Olympic shooters using a one-handed pistol stance?

I'll let you in on a Dirty Little Secret. You can shoot straighter with one hand than with two. There's less to get right. A second hand might be useful for recoil management, but not for accuracy.

Re: Kid will need glasses

You should be wearing glasses anyway as a safety measure, there's no reason not to make them prescription.

My load is 15 grains of Swiss #2 powder, with Cream of Wheat (farina) filler. Volumetric measure.

The Ruger Old Army won’t qualify under MLAIC rules. And they are no longer in production.

Re: How do you stop beginners from obsessing over the sub 6 hold?

Over the years, I've shot both center hold and sub-six. And gotten good results with both. Let the students work with both, allow their experience teach them.

We should be holding matches the 3rd Sunday of the month at the 12th Precinct from October to March.

That's one. Also check the 12th Precinct Pistol Club (Annapolis, MD), and the Fairfax Rod & Gun Club (actually in Manassas, VA).

Look for places that have a decent number of competitions. Example: In the National Capital area, there are two or three clubs holding monthly matches.

Talk to www.customsightpicture.com, get their kit and use it. If you can actually visit Dr. Toler in Richmond, VA, that's best.

Re: How to break into Olympic competitive pistol shooting

Equipment: As others have mentioned, an Izh-46 or FWB 65 is a really good start. Keep your eyes peeled here, and on the GunBroker auction site. Having said that, you can often get secondhand Olympic-grade guns for $1k-$1300. Reading: Skanaker's book is excellent. The Targettalk 10P Files have a lot ...

I think it's more a matter of weight. Clap a dot on a 1911 and it comes up to the weight of a longslide pistol.

Re: 25m RFP Proposed changes

I love RF, but the sad fact is that it's damned near impossible to find a target bay. Men's Sport Pistol would make it MUCH easier to find ranges - you could even go with a portable turning target rig (that fits into the trunk of a car).

23? (snort. giggle) Hell, you're just getting started. If you look at the oldest competitor at any Olympics, they are invariably a shooter...and in their mid-50s or older. Favoring very young shooters is an artifact of one-size-fits-all approaches to funding - an approach that is dominated by the Sp...
