Re: Major Biathlon Rules Change

Clearly Fake News. Everybody knows that AKs are Russian rifles. The actual plan is to ditch the foreign-made .22 Anschutz rifles in favor of the all-American M-14. :-)

The big problem is that we're playing whack-a-mole. About the time you get one thing under control, something else goes wrong.

That surprises me. Any DOD facility should take a CAC card over anything else.

Shooting with cataracts - an update, plus Variolens

For the last three years, I've been coping with cataracts in both eyes. Had surgery on the left eye in March of 2018, redid it in November of 2018 due to shifting of the lens. I'm getting the right eye done tomorrow, after a catastrophic performance at the MLAIC Can-Am match in late July. For the la...

Re: Boy Scout Rifle Shooting

Interesting. I'm involved with a program to train a bunch of Muzzle-Loading Instructors, partly to support Scout programs. They're working up a system to ship loaner guns and bullets (which is the big headache). We'll have to come up with something the kids can take with them...signed targets, perha...

Re: Shooting on TV

Shotgun and Archery are so much easier with only 1 athlete to cover at a time. The obvious solution would be a ripple-fire final. Shooter #1 has one minute (or whatever is appropriate) to shoot his shot. Then Shooter #2 gets one minute. Etc. Real-time color commentary and statistics. Now, if you wa...

Don Nygord recommended RWS Target. (Target Rifle, I guess, these days).

Re: What makes a pistol more "forgiving" than another?

Vibration and motion of the lockwork on the shot release may have something to do with it. I've got a Morini, Toz, and a Steyr FP. The latter is interesting. There's a distinct "clunk" on the shot release. And the Steyr is notoriously unforgiving.

Re: Launching Fight Hate Not Shooters

Simply "Fight Hate Not Sport" for example would seem like it should evoke a positive reaction from all. A simple stylized graphic could identify which sport. If the easily identified logos/graphics are just bullseyes, then a less clear firearms element identifies which target sport. I lik...

Re: Cataract surgery, part 2

That's the issue. Right now, without glasses, I've got about 20/20-25 in the left eye. Right eye is highly myopic, but works great for about 12 inches. I'm effectively using monovision, and have adapted nicely to it. My big worry is that any error in a reading prescription would really screw things ...

Re: USA Shooting Hires Olympic Sports Executive Bob Gambardella for New Chief Operations Officer Role

I tend to agree with Dr. Lee. Treating "management" as agenic to what is being managed has long been a recipe for trouble.

I would also advise USAS to focus on broadening the base, not simply funneling all resources into a handful of competitors at the Olympic level.

Cataract surgery, part 2

Need some advice here... I had cataract surgery done on my left (non-sighting) eye a year ago. I got a monofocal lens, set for distance. I'm now to the point where the right eye needs to be done in the next 6 months...maybe sooner. The right eye is seriously nearsighted (about 3 diopters), it's perf...

Nice! I managed to shoot a 100 in practice once. Highest competition score was a 98, shot in Colt at the 2013 Can-Am match.

Re: U.S. Int'l Muzzle-Loading Team Now Recruiting

They can be very accurate. My original Remington M1863 revolver, made nearly 160 years ago, will put ten shots into a 25mm group at 25 meters. Single-shot pistols and target rifles will do better...the World Championship score in the offhand 50m target rifle event is a 100. And we use the Free Pisto...

Re: Why is Shooting an Olympic Sport?

Several reasons. First, shooting is one of the very few truly global sports. Most Olympic sports are dominated by a handful of countries. Shooting is one of a handful that are not. Second, shooting produces results that are objective. There's a score...and no fuss over judging. Third, shooting is a ...

Re: Olympic BREAKDANCING ???

Fun Olympic trivia: They once awarded an Olympic medal for sculpture.

More fun Olympic trivia: The man who won that Gold, Walter Winans, also won an Olympic Gold for rifle shooting.

Chaser to both: Winans was primarily a pistol shooter...and a noted painter of watercolors. Excellent writer, too.

Re: Hammerli 280 Ultimate buyers Guide?

IIRC, it took Hammerli a good year to come up with the safety for the 280. It's my understanding that there are only two uppers, one secured at the muzzle end by two studs, and a later one secured at the muzzle end by a screw. The latter is much more desirable, especially in .32 S&WL. My .32 upp...
