Smallbore/air friendly ranges in Colorado and Indiana
I'll be going back to school this fall for a PhD in engineering, and I'm mostly considering either Colorado State or Purdue. In the areas around these (Fort Collins, CO and Lafayette, IN), are there ranges that are a good choice for practicing international rifle and pistol disciplines? I've located...

Re: I'm sorry your new air pistol is a piece of crap
Reminds me of car forums where some people just can't get over new performance cars coming with dual-clutch autos instead of manuals. Technology advances. Old tech can be plenty good, but that doesn't mean we should just throw up our hands and say "We're done! No more R&D! Nothing will ever...

Re: 11mm Dovetail to Picatinny Adaptor
Do I use them? No. I prefer iron sights, so no need. With that said, it's a block of metal with grooves in it. There's not a lot of "merit" to be discussed (although I'm unsure how the elevation adjustment works on the one), as long as the rail is milled within the specifications for the p...

Re: 11mm Dovetail to Picatinny Adaptor
First step in looking for shooting gear for our style of shooting, if it's not in the classifieds, is Champion's Choice. They have just about everything, including 1-piece 11mm dovetail scope mounts (http://champchoice.com/store/Main.aspx?p=ItemDetailOptions&item=7237) and two styles of 11mm-to-...

Re: Doing gym with air rifle in mind
My experience has been this: 1) If you’re unsure about new exercises, get a trainer or buddy up with someone with experience. Doesn’t need to be everyday, but once or twice a month until you’re comfortable 2) Endurance. Endurance. Endurance. If you’re training for shooting, it’s much better to do mo...

Technique for settling on target
A question for the more experienced shooters or coaches: what are the advantages and disadvantages of raising the pistol up to the target and holding, as opposed to raising over the target and lowering down into the hold? I have been raising over and then settling down and I find it to be fairly com...

Re: promises, promises
Yeah, with the top load, it's not clear if a tube would work at all unless it was all the way forward, or all the way at the back, and either may unbalance the gun. A small dot like the FastFires or similar might be able to go in place of the rear sight with a properly made adapter. It looks pretty ...

Re: Aussie quote
That puts me in mind of the first time I took my Swedish Mauser out to the range. There I was, shooting respectable (for the condition of the gun and ammo) 4-ish inch groups at about 100 yards with a hundred year old iron-sighted rifle, while just next to me, there was a bunch of guys trading a bran...

Re: NRA Board Member Attendance
Package it however you want, but as far as I’m concerned, taking game outside of tag limits is poaching, regardless of how much responsibility someone accepts after the fact. I’ll freely acknowledge that he has the right to say what he wants to, but like it or not, the board members’ actions reflect...

If being an unabashed bigot and a poacher isn't enough to get Ted Nugent off the board, somehow I doubt chronic absenteeism is enough to. Gives us all a bad name.

Re: old vs new tech
This sounds like car guys talking about whether carburetors are actually better than those newfangled fuel injectors. Technology advances. Old tech can work pretty darn well, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try to find new ways to do things. A good barrel with good pellets will make a good test t...

I could be wrong, but it looks like a 1903 buttplate might fit.

Re: .22 rim fire snap cap use
The orange Pachmayr snaps hold up pretty well to multiple shots - they're a much softer plastic so they can handle quite a few hits. We used them for teaching and safety training when I RO'd for the Oregon State pistol club. Not as cheap as some of the other options, but they fed well from magazines...

Re: Rimfire vs Air - is there a "better" choice?
I just bought an air pistol and love it. Two thoughts...do you need expensive.22 ammo to train? I use CCI SV, for me shooting bullseye and sport pistol, I can’t see the benefit of high end ammo. If you buy an air gun, how much ammo could you buy for what you spend on the air gun? Kurt My math is pr...

Re: Rimfire vs Air - is there a "better" choice?
Somehow I knew Rover would come out of the woodwork to suggest an SSP. I thought about it, but my experience with my old IZH 46 kind of soured me on them. Not that it was bad, but I didn’t enjoy having to put more effort into loading than shooting. A local was selling a FWB 800 Basic that was really...

Rimfire vs Air - is there a "better" choice?
I've had a thought bouncing around my head for a while about shooting choices. It was precipitated by my decision to go back to school after a few years out so I can get a M.S. or Ph.D., and on a grad student stipend, you can't really afford much in the way of luxuries. I like shooting, and I don't ...

Budget offhand stand design
I built this about a year and a half ago and figured I'd share so that maybe I could get some feedback from people who have done similar projects and may have insight for building it better. I wasn't really a fan of spending a full Benjamin on essentially a glorified tripod, so $25 later I built one...
