Dave made an excellent point. Last year I was messing around with some powder puff loads and was getting super light loads to shoot excellent short line. My long line was crap. I forgot to put the stiffer spring back into the pistol for the 50 yard load. My groups were huge. Put the heavier spring b...

When I started shooting for the USAR team, SGM Wheeler was still shooting. I miss shooting with Al, he was a lot of fun.

Some day I need to make a spider for barrel work. My set up time is quite time consuming without one.

Thanks for commenting Jerry. I'm not claiming my pistol will shoot 1/2" with ALL ammo :) When I tested the pistol I had some Eley, RWS and Lapua from my USAR days that I tested (1990's ammo). This pistol shot exceptionally well. Groups ranged from 1/2" - 9/16". I was quite pleased. I ...

Guys, The reason I'm asking for group sizes is because I'm a pistolsmith. I have to be able to quantify results. The use of ransom rest with .22 caliber is the easiest to do with minimal errors compared to the .45 because of recoil. Just trying to get hard numbers for reference.I haven't shot a Nels...

Most of the better shooters I know use 208 with crisp trigger. The ones with rolls wish they were crisp. Steve Reiter won 5 National Championships shooting High Standards. A good/excellent 1911 2lb trigger surpasses a most of the Euro guns because it's not a pivoting trigger and will reset with a sh...

1911 Conversion a step backwards??????

I read the last response and just had to take the time to respond. I'll start from the beginning; started shooting BE with Ruger Gov't model. Consistent high 880's. Got a Hammerli 208 consistent high 880's and a high of 895. That 208 on a good day with best ammo AMU had to offer was a 1.5" pist...

Series 80 Gold Cup

From a gunsmithing point of view regarding your stainless steel Gold Cup. I would be very cautious about tighening your frame and slide. The older pistols will gall; that's where the to similar metals rub against each other and tear metal from the frame or slide rails. The pistol will lock up and yo...

In 1994 I shot CISM in Switzerland when I was with the AMU. I had Morini make me 3 grips; Steyr Air, Toz-35, and Walther GSP. My next match with those grips I set 2 personal best. I have a severe hyper extension of the shooting arm and never had anything close to a natural point of aim; low to the l...

In my experience building dedicated lowers for the .22 conversions I've noticed that the disconnector rail on the slide of the conversions is dimensionally different and changes the relationship between disconnector and the disconnector rail on the slide. You really should have a pistolsmith who spe...

rear sight removal

Hi,
Pretty simple to do. Put pistol in vise...helps a lot! Drift out pin that is in hole large pin. You'll need a long punch to do this. Now drift out large pin. Then one roll pin on each side...just push them deep enough to clear the bridge mount. They stay in pistol. Pull off bridge.

No idea if they make their own barrel, but if I had to guess I'd say they do based on my trips to some factories in Europe a million years ago. Not sure how it compares to current 1911 barrels. Kart and KKM barrels both will shoot right at 1"to 1-1/4" in a good pistol.

Pardini .45

If you look at the Pardini advertisement, the .45 group was shot in a barrel test fixture; very nice group (it's a friends barrel). He also broke 2650 shooting the Pardini, but shoots 1911 instead.

Accuracy X Pistols

The Accuracy X pistols are built right. I've been building/smithing BE pistols since 1989 and they are built to shoot consistently well. I met Steve at Camp Perry this year and had an opportunity to look at several of his pistols. The barrels are fit perfect and the triggers are BE worthy. Many of t...

Coonan & .38 vs. 9mm

The Coonan has a much deeper grip to accomodate the longer .357 with round nose bullet. Need a large hand for the increased depth. No after market parts available for custom build. I've been a pistolsmith since 1989 and have built 9mm and .38 conversions. As we know from the forum's, the 9mm shoot s...

GSP's

The GSP's are nose heavy. If you don't like shooting a heavier pistol, I'd steer away from it. I used to shoot for the AMU. When I used to shoot one I never had a malfunction. Was using RWS and Eley. Probably shot 30,000 rds through it. Also shot the .32 with good success. If I remember right, I was...
