Question 1: If the target is acoustic, and works by locating the sound of the pellet hitting the target or backer, then as soon as you start getting groups big enough for a pellet to pass through, you will need the backer system to record those shots.
Is that correct?
Question 2: Does the backer advance in response to a shot, or does it just creep along slowly? If it advances in response to a shot, I would expect the rolls to last much longer.
Question 3: The backer rolls appear to be about the full width of the black. If you only need it for shots (presumably) clustered in the middle, can you offset the roll horizontally to get a couple passes out of it? This assumes you are still using a full target & not a mask.
1: yes, it is acoustic, and if there are too many shots clumped together, the next shot that passes through that hole will register in a different position. that is why the paper roll / witness paper / backer system is needed.
2: the paper roll advances after each shot, by an amount configurable in the software. i set mine to advance by ~1cm and it works just fine (for 70-80 shots it consumes less than 1 meter of paper)
3: i built my system around the SIUS mask https://buinger.com/Sius-Air-pistol-target-10m and SIUS paper roll: https://buinger.com/Universelle-Papierrolle_1. but other people used other types, even cash register thermal paper blackened with a laundry iron. this is an open source DIY project, so there is room for change or improvement.
if the paper is wider than the 7 ring hole in the mask, you could use it twice by shifting it on the second pass. depends on what paper roll you use and how good you are at shooting :)

FreETarget PC client version 4.0.x and firmware version 4.x
new features:
- the target now supports rapid fire events: Standard Pistol, Center Fire Pistol (both precision and duel), Sport Pistol, etc. The target will turn off the lights instead of the red/green semaphore.
- spoken commands for ISSF rapid fire events ("LOAD", "ATTENTION", etc.)
- no display of scoring: disable the target rings and the score display for training or even during competition, so to not focus on score but on process. Actual score is saved and can be viewed later in the journal
the support exists in the software (both PC client and firmware).
the hardware is a bit tricky. meaning that theoretically it should work, but it depends on the installed microphones (the ones for 10m air pistol are not enough). as far as i know no one, yet, built/tested a 25/50m setup (the large 50cm ISSF precision target).

I was looking into building a 50ft target for 25M events scaled down. I think it would be a good step towards the full 25M target any trying to utilize the current hardware.
I know people have discussed this previously in the facebook group but I don't know if anyone has made progress.

Hello Lake, I just spoke to Allen about this in Colorado Springs. He's working out some bugs on a scaled version. I bet we see something this spring :-)
Just put an order in for a "Competition Target". Seems like the developer is pretty active on targettalk.org. Hoping for a quick turnaround.
As a side note, the project looks like it's got a great API. I'm wondering if it's possible to eliminate the Windows Program completely and collect all data using a raspberry pi. After that, you just need a web interface to manage users/points/shots. Some basic geometry to overlay a bulls eye and you can then bring your own device (ipad, iphone, etc) to use as a point control station. Looking forward to getting the target.

Thank you sir! This is great news!

Hi,
can you tell me about the sensor used in this system? Can I use the "KY-037 High Sensitivity Sound Detection Module" and Arduino Mega for this work?
Thank you.

the sensor is a normal microphone, but it is put on a small circuit board. for more technical details, please join the facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/831490281129882) and ask Allan directly.

Hello.
I'd like to ask if do you have any information about the use of freetarget with the 25m Pistol discipline.
What would be needed to set it up, if there are any blueprints or picture of someone already doing it.
I'm coaching a small team and we are in the similar position than most of small clubs, so we need to improvise :)
Thank you for your work Azmodan, kind regards from Slovenija.
