Haemmerli old stuff, that substance between sear and hammer

Post by scerir »

In certain pistol (H.280, H.208,etc.) Haemmerli used to put, between sear and hammer, a trange substance, something partly mettallic (colour dark grey) and partly greasy. I thought it was something to smooth the sear-hammer contacts, or to polish these pieces. Does anyone know what that substance was?

I always thought it was moly grease. I have Sig Sauer pistols that are greased in a similar fashion, yet today.

(Moly is a very interesting substance that is also put into steel to make it less brittle.)

Many times, and still today, a light grease is used to act as a barrier to unburnt powder and primer compounds.

Yes, it's a moly grease. For the 208s, I believe it is considered essential to maintaining the life of the hammer and sear.

Automatenfett, probs. Sparkly blue flecks. You can get the stuff in Stgw.57 kits, so you can buy some grease and get quite a nice .30 calibre cleaning kit with it.
I use a smudge of it on my GSP trigger plunger pins. It's also good for squeaky washing lines.

Here's a link to a shop in the USA which sells the kits.
